This week is Deaf Awareness Week. I am lucky to work with Deaf business owners on (the marketing-side). Here are just three important things to remember when you meet a Deaf person. 1. Don’t be frightened (sadly my Deaf friends/colleagues say this still come across this) 2. Look at them and not the interpreter (who’s there for you, not them). 3. Speak normally. There are lots of other Deaf Awareness tips I haven’t shared. There is a wealth of talent in the Deaf community. Communication shouldn’t and mustn’t be a barrier. - Behind me are just of the organisations my Deaf clients are working with. #DeafAwarenessWeek #DeafAwareness

OPINION: Deaf awareness is more than a celebration, it’s a call for action Deaf Awareness Month is more than a celebration; it is a call for action. It is an opportunity to foster understanding, inclusion, and respect for the Deaf community. In a world predominantly designed for hearing individuals, it is imperative to acknowledge the experiences of Deaf people, challenge prevailing stereotypes, and strive toward a more inclusive society where every unique experience is valued. September is Deaf Awareness month... Can a Deaf person be told they don't have Deaf culture or lack knowledge on Deaf culture? The answer is NO! Deaf culture is a part of who we are, and our experiences and identity are valid. No one can dictate or gatekeep your cultural identity or experiences. Of course, we have prominent Deaf leaders who have paved the way and set precedents on the outlook of Deaf culture which we respect and honor. However, their leadership and legacy is there to inspire and empower, NOT DICTATE, how individual Deaf people live their lives. Deaf culture is not a one-size-fits-all. It's a culture shaped by diverse experiences, perspectives, and identities. Respect the uniqueness of each Deaf individual's journey! #Deafawarenessmonth #DeafCulture #DeafIdentity #DeafPride #DeafEmpowerment

It’s so frustrating when you just want to be able to have a conversation with someone, but they don’t have any knowledge of what it means to be deaf aware. So, how better to raise the profile of deaf awareness than to have a whole week dedicated to deaf awareness!? Check out the fantastic resources below to see how you can be more deaf aware. 👇

World Deaf Day, also known as the International Day of the Deaf, is observed annually on September 29th. This day aims to raise awareness about the rights and needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing and promote the use of sign languages. The World Federation of the Deaf, which represents more than 70 million deaf people worldwide, organizes various activities and events to mark this day and promote the recognition of sign languages as a fundamental human right. Did you know that there are more than 300 different sign languages in use around the world?🌎👂 SingularMind #singularmind #Audiologist #World_Deaf_day

Education is an integral human right. Being able to communicate and share with peers in your first language is a significant part of peer support throughout life.
This powerful clip from BBC's Waterloo Road TV series featuring a deaf student highlights the critical importance of (1) going to school with your peers - in this case, deaf peers, sharing the same language and culture, and (2) using qualified, experienced sign language interpreters. Education is a human right, and for far too long deaf children have not been afforded the opportunity to be educated at the same level as our peers, or in a nurturing, inclusive and equal environment. While I attended a mainstream school with a Deaf unit, I was never educated in my first language, Auslan, and was often the only deaf student in my class, so this video was triggering for me. I pined for lunch breaks so I could be with my deaf peers and converse in Auslan. It is now 2024, and incredibly, not much has changed over the decades. Article 5 of the World Federation of the Deaf Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children states "All deaf children have a right to quality, inclusive, multilingual education in their own national sign language(s) and the national written language(s)". I urge you to watch and share this video, and reflect.

Deaf Awareness Week takes place between the 6th to the 12th of May. Let us take this time to celebrate our deaf community, raise awareness, and spread inclusivity! Here are A2i's top three tips for Deaf Awareness Week: 1. Find out communication preferences. Before your expected meeting, learn the individual's requirements and their preferred communication support. 2. Get the individual's attention before you speak. Try move into good lighting so they can see you, wave your hand in their line of vision, or lightly tap their shoulder. 3. Always face the individual. Communicate face-to-face and keep eye contact. This will help the person lip read and see your facial expressions if they need to. Learn more tips from our blog https://lnkd.in/e8Q2uih5 #DeafAwarenessWeek #DiversityInclusion #a11y #bsl
