⁉️ Did you know that one of key reasons the Donner Party failed to safely migrate west in 1846 was they took an unknown ‘short-cut’? 📅 In May 1868, a group of 300 migrants led by the Donner brothers, Jacob and George, set off from Independence, Missouri to travel west to California. They made several serious errors which made their journey much more difficult: 👥 The group had a large number of elderly, women and children compared to the number of men. 🌨️ They set off too late in the season which meant they would be travelling through the mountains during autumn and winter! 🗺️ And the brothers decided to take the Hastings Cut Off, a supposed shortcut! Why was this a fatal mistake? 🚩 It was an unproven route which was 150 miles longer than the established trial. ⛰️ It wasn't a well used route, so it was unmarked. There weren’t established wagon ruts to follow and the terrain was much more difficult, steeper and with deep canyons. ⌚ As a result they lost cattle and oxen, 4 wagons and it took a month longer to cross. 🍂 It was October by the time they rejoined the main California Trail. 🆘 Of the party, 87 people decided to climb the mountain. They became stuck near Truckee Lake and by December, their food supply ran out. Seventeen people decided to carry on to seek help. Those left behind had to resort to cannibalism to survive. 😨 😨 It wasn't until February 1847 that rescuers could reach them. Need some help with your GCSE history?
