⁉️ Did you know that one of key reasons the Donner Party failed to safely migrate west in 1846 was they took an unknown ‘short-cut’? 📅 In May 1868, a group of 300 migrants led by the Donner brothers, Jacob and George, set off from Independence, Missouri to travel west to California. They made several serious errors which made their journey much more difficult: 👥 The group had a large number of elderly, women and children compared to the number of men. 🌨️ They set off too late in the season which meant they would be travelling through the mountains during autumn and winter! 🗺️ And the brothers decided to take the Hastings Cut Off, a supposed shortcut! Why was this a fatal mistake? 🚩 It was an unproven route which was 150 miles longer than the established trial. ⛰️ It wasn't a well used route, so it was unmarked. There weren’t established wagon ruts to follow and the terrain was much more difficult, steeper and with deep canyons. ⌚ As a result they lost cattle and oxen, 4 wagons and it took a month longer to cross. 🍂 It was October by the time they rejoined the main California Trail. 🆘 Of the party, 87 people decided to climb the mountain. They became stuck near Truckee Lake and by December, their food supply ran out. Seventeen people decided to carry on to seek help. Those left behind had to resort to cannibalism to survive. 😨 😨 It wasn't until February 1847 that rescuers could reach them. Need some help with your GCSE history? WITH KINDNESS, WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND... Imagine a humble Scottish farmer named Fleming toiling away on his farm, when suddenly, piercing screams shatter the tranquility. Without a second thought, he abandons his tools and races towards the distress. What he finds is a child struggling in the swamp, trapped and drowning. With no hesitation, Fleming risks his own life, using a long branch to pull the child to safety. The very next day, a luxurious car pulls up to Fleming's modest home. Out steps a distinguished gentleman—Randolph Churchill, the father of the boy Fleming saved. Churchill offers to repay the farmer's bravery with riches, but Fleming refuses, saying, "Saving someone is my duty; humanity has no price." Just then, Fleming's own son appears at the door. Churchill, intrigued, asks, "Is this your son?" When Fleming proudly confirms, Churchill proposes an intriguing deal: if Fleming won't accept his money, he'll fund the boy’s education at the finest schools, ensuring he gets the same opportunities as Churchill's own child. Fleming, realizing the chance to give his son a future he could never afford, gratefully accepts. His son goes on to attend St Mary's Medical School in London and becomes Sir Alexander Fleming, the inventor of penicillin. But here’s where the story comes full circle: years later, it is penicillin that saves the life of Winston Churchill, Randolph’s son, who would become the Prime Minister of Britain twice. Isn’t it fascinating how a single act of kindness can ripple through history, connecting lives in such unexpected ways? I reflect as we celebrated Juneteenth this past Wednesday and how it reminds us that America still has a long way to go when it comes to recognizing the worth or black and brown people. We all can recall in school how we learned about 40 acres and a mule and how that promised was never fulfilled. A recent report came out that reveals some families actually received land ONLY to have their rights to this land revoked. Take time to listen to this fascinating reporting or if you are a geek like me read the full report online. It is proof that generational wealth was taken away from black and brown people and legally it appears that there is no way for them to recover this lost. Some of the land today is worth 2 million dollars. Perhaps legally nothing can happen but what about morally. Would love to hear your thoughts. If you’ve been offline for the holidays, you might’ve missed the news: New Harvest received a $1.5M one-to-one match from the Canadian Government, which means every dollar you give (until midnight tonight) will go twice as far. And twice as far is exactly the amplification we need to get where we’re going. Our work is entirely donor-funded, which means the strides we've made in working toward solving some of the field's biggest challenges couldn't have happened without you. Your support will: 🔬 Fund critical public research to drive the field forward. 📓 Equip policymakers with transparent, independent data. 🌏 Ensure cellular agriculture serves the public good, not just private interests. So, are you in? Every gift -- no matter the size -- fuels forward progress. https://lnkd.in/gmnwwtrh

Lone Tree is a story about America changing and about how people deal with change. It is a nuanced exploration of the fabric of our culture. It asks how to make sense of events that lead perfectly normal people to commit horrendously abnormal acts. #lonetree #truecrime #historicalbooks #nonfictionbooks

Today, as I write this post, I cannot stop thinking about the future of my three daughters. As a mother, teacher, and educational psychologist, I find myself deeply troubled by the future. The devastating floods happened in my country, Spain, these events, though tragic, reinforce the urgent need for education around resilience, empathy, and environmental responsibility—principles I strive to instill in my students and daughters alike. There is so much to learn from this loss: the importance of collective awareness, of equipping our children with emotional intelligence to process grief and change, and of teaching them a profound respect for nature and its power. It is crucial that we foster this understanding not only in our classrooms but within our communities, nurturing a generation that recognizes the critical role they play in sustaining and protecting our world. Through lessons in empathy, collaboration, and active care for the environment, we can begin to prepare them for the challenges they will face. My thoughts and solidarity are with those families who are struggling to process this pain. The loss is not just personal, it is national, and it reminds us of how vulnerable we are. Tragedies like this are often unimaginable until they strike close to home, yet around the world, countless families endure similar horrors daily. Let’s ensure that this tragedy becomes more than just a painful memory. Let it galvanize us to instill resilience, empathy, and environmental stewardship in the next generation. Together, we can honor those affected not only through our words but through lasting change. This is our call to be better—for them, for us, and for those who come after.

A majority of the support received by newcomers in recovery is given completely on a volunteer basis by dedicated individuals in the rooms of recovery fellowships. Service work creates volunteers who are dedicated to their own sobriety and to the sobriety of others. We would be remiss not to recognize and thank both these individuals IN recovery, and ALL those who help us at Fellowship Hall through our many events. From our Walk for Recovery, to the Golf Tournament, to the Conference—we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you all. Thank you to ALL volunteers! Looking for a way to get on the path to recovery? We’re here to help.
