What does it mean to have a “degree-defining experience?” Imagine staying overnight at Lick Observatory to meet astronomers and learning to use the Shane 3-meter telescope. Or getting SCUBA certified (no small feat for an undergrad) pursuing scientific diving and underwater research. Or how about engaging in cutting-edge cancer-bioinformatics research? And that’s just the beginning. The UCSC Science Division has received a $1 million donation to begin a major new program to fund transformative, hands-on learning for thousands of students. The program will pilot 17 projects across campus that aim to profoundly inspire undergraduates and forever change how they see their time at UCSC and their future careers. Extensive research led by Science Division faculty has shown that field courses have an overwhelmingly positive impact on students. Across all demographic groups, students who participate in introductory experiential field courses report higher self-efficacy when compared to students in traditional laboratory classes. Moreover, the outcomes are especially impactful for students from underrepresented backgrounds, reflecting higher self-efficacy gains, increased college graduation rates, greater major retention, and higher GPAs at graduation. The division estimates that these programs will reach a total of more than 2,300 undergraduates in this initiative’s first year. We can’t wait to see all of the amazing work our students will be able to do thanks to this new program! Read more: https://bit.ly/3A1edHY

OXFORD DIARY PART 3: ON GROWING SPACE One of the key messages shared with the students of the Oxford MBA during their Smart Space Elective was the one regarding the growth of the space economy. But not only in the sense of its nominal size, the past years’ growth rates outpassing the rest of the global economy, or projections of its future rapid expansion. The key message was about the growth of the space economy in its complexity and the shift in our understanding – who plays a role in it? There is a broad variety of stakeholders that are traditionally not considered part of the space economy, yet they significantly influence it and benefit from it today: 🦾 large tech companies 💸 financial institutions 🌳 organizations working in areas of sustainability and security 📡 key customers of satellite data solutions 📚 Educational institutions like Saïd Business School, University of Oxford Our understanding of the space ecosystem has evolved and broadened. When discussing the future of the space economy, they all should be at the table. I am excited that the oldest and largest space sector association in the world International Astronautical Federation is leading by example with its new initiative in this area (more on that soon). What other important stakeholder groups should be considered part of the (broader) space ecosystem? Do not hesitate to share your thoughts! #spaceeconomy #spaceindustry #innovation #space
