Topical Ivermectin and the Microbiome: New Insights into Rosacea Management
Rosacea is a common chronic skin condition that causes facial redness, visible blood vessels, and often acne-like papules and pustules. It primarily affects adults over 30 and is often triggered by factors like heat, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and an overgrowth of Demodex mites. The exact cause of rosacea remains unknown, but inflammation, immune dysfunction, and imbalances in the skin microbiome are key contributors.
A recent study explored the effects of 1% topical ivermectin cream on rosacea and found it not only reduces Demodex density but also improves the skin microbiome balance.
Study Highlights:
• Participants: 10 adults with papulopustular rosacea (mean age: 66.4 years).
• Duration: 12 weeks of daily ivermectin treatment.
• Findings:
• Significant reduction in Demodex density on affected skin (P = .002).
• Increased abundance of Staphylococcus epidermidis on lesional skin (P = .039), potentially improving skin health.
• Reduced papule counts and erythema scores (P = .002).
• No changes in Cutibacterium acnes or on nonlesional skin.
The study concluded that ivermectin improves rosacea symptoms by modulating the skin microbiome, providing relief beyond its known ability to reduce Demodex.
Key Takeaway:
“Treatment with topical ivermectin may improve the symptoms of rosacea through modulation of the skin microbiome beyond decreasing Demodex,” the authors stated, shedding light on new therapeutic opportunities.
