One of the most hopeful presentations at our conference about waste was the one of France (Paris). Blanche Laskar explained how they will tackle the waste problem at the source: ✅ by 2040, all single-use plastic packaging will be banned ✅ by 2030, there will be 50% less single-use plastic bottles ✅ oxodegradable plastic bags will be prohibited ✅ restaurants must accept customers with reusable containers ✅ access to tap water will be ensured ✅ there will be an obligation to use reusable packaging ✅ And much more Watch the presentation through this link: https://lnkd.in/eSwMJAhb This new law in France is a remarkable example of what all countries should aim for. If not, the industry will continue flooding society with more and more disposable packaging and items, and waste management will never be able to stop the pollution and squandering of resources this creates.

Before the U.S. government began implementing bans on plastic bags, plastic waste entering the ocean totaled over 12 million tons annually. A recent study finds a significant decline in the number of plastic bags found on beaches. According to Daniela De Lorenzo, there has been a 29% reduction in plastic grocery bags collected from beaches and waterways between 2022 and 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels. While many people are unhappy with the initial lack of access to plastic bags, the long-term effect on our environment will be worth it. #Plastics #WasteManagement #MachineLearning #Pollution https://lnkd.in/er3vDTeP

The annual production of mismanaged plastic waste is expected to reach 155–265 million tons by the year 2060. This would mean more plastic waste in our #soils and #ocean, it's time to take action. Let's push for a legally binding global agreement that will address the issue of plastics. #PlasticFreeSchools #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #UPGsustainability #UnitedPeopleGlobal

Reducing plastic waste: big ambitions, little progress… It’s one thing to have lofty ambitions to reduce plastic waste. It’s another to achieve them. The will is there; it’s not yet clear we’ve found a way. As an example, in 2014 California banned single-use plastic bags; however, that didn’t stop the waste plastic problem. It was executed poorly and allowed thicker, supposedly multi-use plastics bags to flourish only to find that they, too, were being discarded. The California Senate is now proposing legislation to ban all plastic bags at check-outs (paper will still be available) in hope of reducing single-use plastic consumption. …interesting article by Kevin J. Europe is generating #more #plastic #waste than ever, but the #EU is working to reverse this trend ♻️. While much waste is burned for energy or exported due to capacity, technology, or funding limitations, recycling rates are increasing. Three years ago today, the EU banned single-use plastics like plates and cutlery. Newer rules target reducing plastic packaging waste, such as bottles and single-use containers, and addressing marine litter.
Europe is generating more plastic waste than ever — but the EU is working to stop this trend ♻️ Waste is often burned for energy and a lot of it gets exported outside Europe due to lack of capacity, tech or funds. However, more and more plastic is recycled, and new EU rules require countries to meet big reduction targets for plastic waste. #OnThisDay three years ago, the EU banned the sale of single-use plastics such as plates and cutlery. Newer rules focus on reducing the high amounts of plastic packaging waste (e.g. bottles and single-use containers) and marine litter. Read more 👉 europa.eu/!bVHhjd

Since we are more than halfway through #PlasticFreeJuly, we are highlighting some of the ways plastic in packaging will be reduced when the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is implemented. ♻️Recycled Content Requirements: PPWR will mandate minimum recycled content in packaging. For example, single-use plastic bottles must contain 30% recycled content by 2030 and 65% by 2040. This will significantly reduce the use of virgin plastics. 🚫Ban on Plastic Packaging: To cut unnecessary waste, PPWR will ban plastic packaging for certain uses, such as fruit and vegetables. This is a major step towards reducing single-use plastics. 🌱Compostable Standards: "Compostable" will truly mean compostable. The European Commission will set clear specifications for compostable packaging, ensuring it meets strict environmental standards. #Move away from Plastic Water Bottles 1. The water bottling process releases 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. 2. Around 1.3 billion plastic water bottles used worldwide every day and it uses more than 3800 tons plastic on single day. However, only 12% of these bottles are recycled. 3. Though Water Bottle industry creates jobs and good for economy but it polluts ocean and kills marine life so adversely affecting tourism and fishing communities. 4. As per study, both temperature and amount of time that bottled water is stored increases the breakdown of chemical bonds and harmful chemicals can leach into water. 5. Its less expensive to carry your own water in reusable bottles than to buy it. Its good for your health too. To the best possible extent carry your reusable water bottle and help to save the environment! #worldenvironmentday
