SPE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMITTEE presents🌟 SPE Diversity & Inclusion Member Spotlight 🌟 Bagilya Karsybayeva Eni Cote d ‘Ivoire Project Control Manager SPE D&I Global Volunteer: My D&I journey with SPE began in 2022 when I co-moderated an event for the SPE Russia & Caspian D&I series. That experience shifted my narrow understanding of Diversity & Inclusion, opening my mindset in ways I hadn't expected. I had the privilege of meeting incredible women, each unique, but united by one trait: their deep CARE for what lies beyond their direct responsibilities—whether at work or at home. These women are true change-makers, supporting girls in STEM, mentoring others, and advocating for D&I at all levels in their workplaces. Their impact inspired me to apply for the SPE D&I Committee, and I was fortunate to join this amazing community. Over the past two years, I've had the honor of working on the ATCE team to promote D&I participation at SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. Together, we made great strides: In 2023, our proposal, “Promoting D&I in STEM: From School to University,” was selected for a Special Session at ATCE in San Antonio. 🎉 In 2024, our second proposal, “Empowering Change: Progressing Diversity and Inclusion,” will be featured as a Strategic Panel at ATCE in New Orleans! 🎉 These successes prove that the D&I agenda has moved beyond small discussions, and I’m so proud that the Society of Petroleum Engineers is leading the charge to spread this message. I've always believed in SPE’s mission to disseminate technical knowledge, but now I see it’s so much more than that! My journey with SPE started almost 20 years ago in university, and just like the society, I’ve evolved along the way. My chapter in the D&I committee has come to a close, but I’m excited to explore the new boundaries we can push together in the future! 🚀 What theme should SPE explore at ATCE 2025? We're coming to the end of British Science Week, so wanted to share another insightful career journey of one of our members who studied in the field of science and now works in the energy sector. Susannah (Suki) Ferris completed an Anthropology MSc in Energy and Society at the Durham Energy Institute, focusing on the social issues around energy transitions and global politics of energy development. She said: "I chose to study this because I have spent most of my life overseas, and I have experienced a range of different energy realities. My degree ignited my passion and drive to work in the energy sector, where I’ve had a really rewarding career so far." Susannah, also know as Suki, works as a Business Development Manager at National Gas and is also a Associate member of IGEM. On her membership and the industry she added: “You can play a meaningful role at IGEM and within the gas industry, and you do not have to be an engineer. Diversity of thought and experience will be key to the success and growth of the gas industry, where there are equally valuable roles for non-engineers." On diversity in the industry, which highlights the Smashing Stereotypes campaign theme for this year's British Science Week, Susannah commented: “Over the span of my career, it’s been really encouraging to see the emphasis, dialogue and ambition of bringing women and all under-represented minorities into the gas industry. 📅June 23 is International Women in Engineering Day, so Odeta Zubrienė, Head of People and Culture division at Litgrid, looked at some of the indicators that matter to us. 👷♀️Litgrid currently employs 34 women engineers who create significant added value for Lithuania every day. ✨Women's names also shine among the students of Kaunas University of Technology who receive Litgrid scholarships. When choosing a profession, only half of the population still thinks about engineering, and more precisely, the male part of it. Compared to the total number of students in the country, 4 out of 10 men and only 1 out of 10 women choose to study natural, technical and applied sciences, but Lithuanian employers rank male and female engineers among the most in-demand employees, so women are in high demand. 📒Reflecting on an Inspiring GCI Career Night! Tonight, I had the opportunity to attend GCI Career Night where four SIPA alumni Sichen Liu, Fan Yu, Leo Luo and Yuchen Ye shared their unique journeys in energy finance industry. It was an eye-opening discussion about the evolving landscape of these critical sectors, shaped by policies like the IRA, advancements in AI, and the global push for sustainability. The panelists discussed steps to achieve our goal of energy transition, which is empowered by the opportunities presented by cheap renewables, electrification, and greater energy efficiency. Sichen Liu also talked about her insights on how AI tech could play a key role in this process. However, challenges like market uncertainty were also discussed in the panel talk. As Leo Luo said about the pessimistic side of view, there are still a long way for us to electrify, improve energy efficiency, and address residual emissions. This evening was a reminder of the incredible community and resources SIPA offers, not only to learn but also to connect with those driving real change in the world. Go (viral) Green Pioneers! 🌱🌍 This week, I had the pleasure of giving a LinkedIn training session for our RWE Green Pioneers - our retention program for high-potential students. Together with 10 international colleagues, we tackled LinkedIn basics: the importance of the platform for recruiting and employer branding, building a personal network, and creating strong profiles. But (and here's what I find most exciting): we also talked about something that's often the hardest part – getting started with posting. Many of us wonder: What do I even talk about? Here's the thing: our Green Pioneers do such incredible work they can be proud of, that I could probably write 10 posts about it myself! But sometimes, it's not easy to see your own impact or know where to start. That's where I come in – to give that little push, offer encouragement, and help them share their stories with confidence. 🌟 My three key tips here? ✅ Be authentic ✅ Share what moves you ✅ Have fun with it! Besides that, i'm absolutely of the opinion LinkedIn isn't just about showcasing your skills as an employee, but also about showing who you are as a person. How do you measure success? From a committee perspective, the answer may seem simple - number of events planned vs executed, the average number of attendees per event, positive external feedback etc. But what if it's something more? For example, staying true to a deeper sense of purpose. As a committee, we have always put the interest of YPs first, and in challenging times, our committee has proven to be a beacon of hope for many students and young professionals. These are some of the important self-reflections that were discussed during our annual strategy meeting. A big shout-out to S&P Global Commodity Insights for their generous volunteering program which allowed our AAPG Europe Advisor, Gerardo G., to help us with our strategy for 2025, plus reviewing 2024. Events don’t always go to plan and along with whatever successes the YPs may have had, it is usually intertwined with failures in between. This was a good time for the team to self-reflect. These lessons are what keep us human, and ultimately form the building blocks necessary to facilitate our growth and help keep us focused on what matters most.   Our mission is multifaceted and parts of this involve continuing building a collaborative geoscience community via free networking opportunities, tackling skill shortages through outreach initiatives, addressing misconceptions about the energy industry at the grassroots level and championing the importance of geoscience. The team extends heartfelt thanks to everyone we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with as well as our audience. Our mission is not possible without your contributions.
