Absolutely, the essence of Diwali lies in light, hope, and not in blaring noise or polluting our surroundings. Yet, each year, I find us witnessing the relentless fireworks, the streets littered with remnants of crackers, and the air so thick with smoke that stepping outside feels hazardous. With AQI levels skyrocketing to 900, Delhi’s air has become unbreathable. It’s a tragic irony that the very festival meant to celebrate life and light ends up darkening the air we all share. If we all commit to a more conscious Diwali, focused on light rather than noise and pollution, we can inspire others to do the same. Air pollution: Toxic fumes from crackers exacerbate respiratory issues, harming humans, animals, and plants. 2. Noise pollution: Ear-shattering decibels disturb wildlife, pets, and human tranquility. 3. Waste generation: Discarded crackers and packaging contribute to urban waste. *Health Implications:* 1. Respiratory distress: Asthma, COPD, and other breathing ailments worsen due to poor air quality. 2. Cardiovascular risks: Increased particulate matter harms heart patients. 3. Elderly vulnerability: Seniors, already fragile, face heightened health risks. *Lost Traditions:* Our elders celebrated Diwali with simplicity, elegance, and environmental consciousness: 1. Lighting diyas (earthen lamps) 2. Decorating homes with flowers and rangoli 3. Sharing traditional sweets and snacks (faral) 4. Engaging in family gatherings and storytelling I am not against firecrackers entirely, but let's strive for moderation: 1. Restrict cracker use to minimal, designated times. 2. Choose environmentally friendly crackers (if available). 3. Encourage innovative, pollution-free alternatives. By embracing sustainable practices and revisiting our heritage, we can preserve Diwali's true spirit while protecting our environment, health, and well-being.

These days, I've noticed that some Diwali wishes are full of unexpected advice: Don’t burn crackers, it harms the environment. Celebrate without causing pollution. Be mindful of the planet during festivals. Yet, some of these very people smoke, drive without care, or overlook pollution on regular days. Diwali is a cultural and spiritual celebration, not an excuse for selective awareness campaigns. If you genuinely care, practice it year-round, not just during festivals. It's funny how people who smoke daily or drive without concern suddenly become environment advocates during Diwali. Festivals hold cultural and spiritual significance, and celebrating with joy shouldn't be shamed. Let's not single out Diwali as the time to teach pollution control. Looking back, in childhood Diwali as a child was all about fireworks shows, excitement, and planning our cracker list with friends' weeks in advance. Over the years, the way we celebrate Diwali has undergone a shift. With conversations around air quality, environmental health, and community well-being gaining momentum across the countries, there’s a collective to approach festivals like Diwali with a bit more thoughtfulness. Firecrackers, once central to the festivities, are now reconsidered for their impact on air quality, noise levels, and public health. To me, Diwali isn't quite the same as it used to be, but it’s evolving in ways that resonate far more deeply. Its great to see families are finding meaningful, sustainable ways to celebrate—opting for biodegradable diyas, organic colors for rangolis, and even joining in community clean-ups. Many of us also now lean toward supporting local artisans, choosing handmade decor that not only honors our traditions but celebrates India’s rich heritage.
