Engineering meets Ecosystem - together with my colleague, Dr. Kadir Orhan, we are organizining an international workshop at Kiel university's #CAU Research and Technology Centre Westcoast (#FTZ). We are looking forward to bring scientists from different disciplines together and discuss interesting results and potential links between currently ongoing projects such as #iSeal, #CoastalFutures, #Orchestra, #PureWind, #WindSys. Engineering meets Ecosystem: Developing a Roadmap for Future International Collaboration between Marine Renewable Energy and Marine Ecosystem Researchers Date & Venue: 26 September 2024 @ FTZ (Hafentörn 1, 25761 Büsum, Germany) Scope: Environmental risks related to failed climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as extreme weather events and natural disasters, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse, are intensifying. Mitigating further damage requires a prompt and strengthened response to accelerate the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development. To this end, ocean renewable energy (ORE) resources such as offshore wind, wave or hydrokinetic energy are becoming increasingly popular and are involved in the cli-mate strategies and targets of many countries across the globe. In light of newly emerging technologies such as floating offshore wind turbines, wave energy converters that are durable against extreme conditions, and marine current turbines, ORE is proving viable for diversifying the global energy portfolio and combating climate change more efficiently. However, it is of utmost importance to under-stand the impact of these technologies on marine ecosystems, namely area consumption, changing morphodynamics, underwater noise, etc. To this end, the EmE workshop aims to bring together marine renewable energy and marine ecosystem researchers to strengthen synergy and collaboration. Goal: The main goals of the workshop are listed below: o Discussing emerging ORE technologies with an emphasis on recent developments in physical and numerical modelling tools employed in ORE research o Discussing state-of-the-art marine ecosystem research with an emphasis on underwater acoustics o Discussing the link between ORE and marine ecosystem research and collaboration opportunities o Identifying funding opportunities and developing a roadmap for continued cooperation
