Whether it’s watching David Attenborough’s latest Perfect Planet films or using high-tech VR to experience the Amazon, many of us are familiar with experiencing the natural world through technology. We are, however, much less familiar with understanding the many emerging ways in which technology can and should help us protect, restore and more sustainably manage our natural resources. At Nature4Climate (N4C), we are excited by the emergence of what we are calling ‘Nature Tech’ – a term that encompasses the application of modern technology to help enable, accelerate and scale-up nature’s ability to combat climate change and deliver a range of other benefits for people and the planet. Left to its own devices, nature has been providing benefits to humankind since the beginning of time. Unfortunately, in far too many places, nature is under threat and we now know that proactive steps need to be taken care for our natural ecosystems, and allow them to care for us. These actions are known, collectively, as nature-based solutions (NbS), which are defined by IUCN as ‘actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems, that address societal challenges providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits’. A sub-section of NbS are natural climate solutions which are focused specifically on climate mitigation and adaptation… https://lnkd.in/gQiTCFUJ

We are going to 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 … by plane We present: 🌍✈️ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘕𝘠𝘊 : This September, the founders Emma Money and Antoinette Nothomb will be boarding a flight from London to New York to attend Climate Week NYC. Imperial College London invited us to pitch and spread the beauty of Cyanoskin across the globe ;) We will meet investors, and partners. Want to see us pitch: https://lnkd.in/eDWxdXbi But let’s be real: flying to a climate event isn’t exactly the most sustainable move. The Carbon Footprint: Our round trip between London and New York will emit approximately 5,312 tons of CO2eq (The Guardian, 2020) Why We're Owning Up: The irony isn’t lost on us. We know that hopping on a plane to discuss climate tech is counterintuitive. That’s why we’re committed to making sure this trip isn’t just about attending an event but about taking responsibility for our carbon footprint. Earlier this year, we travelled to Berlin, for a deep tech event with Techstars, by train. That journey saved us over 90% of the CO2 emissions compared to flying. But since there's no train line across the Atlantic (yet!), here’s what we’re doing instead: Our Commitment: We pledge to offset every ton of CO2 we emit by capturing twice that amount. To absorb 5.4 tonsX2 of CO2 from those flight, it will take us less than 50 litres of our algae-based coating solution working for a year. We challenge ourselves—and you—to take climate action seriously. Let’s hold ourselves accountable for every ton of CO2 we emit. Join Us: Intrigued? Let’s connect. We’re here to help you reach your net-zero goals effortlessly, with solutions that make a real impact. #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability #ClimateTech #Cyanoksin #ClimateWeekNYC Wanna see how much you emit with your flights: https://lnkd.in/dy7cjcE The guardien, 2020., Taking one return flight generates more CO2 than citizens of some countries produce in a year, retrieved from https://lnkd.in/ekYgBvhn.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌍🌿 Today is Earth Day, an annual event aiming to raise awareness about environmental protection, in dozens of countries across the globe. The current environmental crisis is mostly caused by climate change and biodiversity loss, while also having other aspects. Unfortunately, the rapid economic development of the industrial age and onward, resulted in the significant degradation of the natural environment. Hence, the great challenge of our time is to improve the standard of living for humanity, without undermining the planet. Sustainable development is a commonly used term, without always being accompanied by the appropriate measures to accomplish it. Personally, I have the honor to participate in research projects such as DIAMOND, NDC ASPECTS and IAM COMPACT, which aim to study and formulate effective climate policies, by utilizing integrated assessment models. Moreover, the energy transition is an ambitious goal, that can be achieved by implementing the correct policies. In the photo below, we can see Earth from space, as it was captured by the Apollo 17 crew. By contemplating this image, we may appreciate our planet more deeply, and learn to cherish it as we should! #climatechange #sustainability #earthday #linkedin

🌊 What is the fate of the Great Barrier Reef? Did you know that coral bleaching is threatening to destroy one of the world's greatest natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef? This disturbing truth prompted me to investigate how we can protect this crucial environment for future generations. 📚 About My Project. As part of my COMM2233 Data Story Project at UNSW, I used data storytelling to highlight the coral bleaching catastrophe and propose long-term remedies, such as expanding marine protection zones. This research helped me integrate my work with SDG Goal 14: Life Below Water, which seeks to protect and restore marine ecosystems. Analysing trends in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) revealed how human-caused climate change exacerbates coral stress. My presentation used eye-catching data visualisations and actionable techniques to push for decisive action. 🔍 Reflection and lessons learnt. This journey was transformational. I strengthened my data analysis, visualisation, and communication skills while dealing with complicated environmental challenges. The process of transforming abstract data into tangible insights honed my narrative skills and increased my respect for collaborative input. I'm pleased with the end outcome, which I'd rate a 8 out of 10. This experience has inspired me to continue growing, particularly in customising data-driven tales to engage a wide audience. 😊Gratitude and acknowledgements Special thanks to my COMM2233 mentors and peers, particularly Owen Tong, Alireza Ghaffarian and Angelica Alexandreana Wu, for their advice and comments. Your feedback helped me to improve my work significantly. Let's talk about protecting our oceans and campaigning for sustainability! 🌏💧 #UNSWDataVisComm #SDG14 #LifeBelowWater #DataStorytelling #Sustainability #CoralReefConservation

Pacific Peering’s leadership team had a terrific time in Barcelona discussing the future of sustainable ocean technology. Guillaume DURIEUX and Noel BUTTIN both led panel discussions on SMART Cable technologies. Noel, our CTO, discussed how to become #OceanSmart by radically scaling up ocean and climate data collection. SMART Cables will play a major part in climate data collection. With environmental sensors from these cables, scientists will better understand climate change by tracking ocean warming, current circulations, and sea level rise, and will be able to provide emergency responders with advanced warning of tsunamis. Healthier oceans improve all aspects of the blue economy, and we look forward to working with all our partners in bringing you a SMART future. Special thanks to Paul Holthus, founder and CEO of the World Ocean Council, for organizing this high-impact event. #SMART #SMARTCable #SubmarineCable #DigitalConnectivity #SeismicMonitoring #PacificRegion #Telecommunications #EnvironmentalMonitoring #Seismology #TsunamiDetection #ClimateChange #NaturalDisaster #Infrastructure #Innovation #BlueEconomy #OceanScience #OceanConservation #OceanDecade #globalbluefinancesummit #SOS2024 #BlueFIN2024
