Today, we’re celebrating Women in Apprenticeship by spotlighting Becca Stankovich, an apprentice in our California Farm Academy Apprenticeship Program! Becca works at Fiery Ginger Farm in West Sacramento, a 2-acre vegetable production farm dedicated to transforming food access for students. The farm distributes fresh, local produce to nearby school districts and engages in farm-to-school education programs. Becca has found fulfillment working on a farm that prioritizes community and values education, especially in her time spent working with students. This February, Becca will graduate as a journeyworker in beginning farm management, ready to step into a new leadership role on her farm. In honor of Youth Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the often life-changing benefits and value of Registered Apprenticeship program opportunities for youth. Meet Izaias Pirila Frank, an 18-year-old student in our Arizona Hospitality Training Academy Line Cook Registered Apprenticeship program – one of many young adults in our training program and on their way to a good union job and a dynamic career pathway. In his words - "I am passionate about cooking, because it is an expression of love. I can remember when I was six or seven, watching my single mother making dumplings after coming home from a nine-hour shift. My young mind could not yet fathom the stress, anxiety and sacrifice it would take to raise and support three kids, I could however comprehend the amount of love she put into making dinner for us. With every bite, we tasted her love for us! Next was Anthony Bourdain, the chef who introduced me to various other cultures, ingredients and people (through his television show) and how all of that works in harmony to create amazing dishes. I love working with people and learning new techniques. I ask a lot of questions and jump right in to try innovative things." Chef Drew Lucyshyn, his Instructor at Phoenix HTA, was quick to add, “Izaias is engaged and enthusiastic; he always goes above and beyond and consistently produces excellent work – especially for his age.” Here’s to creating and celebrating inspiring young students like Izaias and apprenticeships as a pathway to career success! #YAW2024 #YouthApprenticeshipWeek #ApprenticeshipUSA! 🌾🚜 Happy National Apprenticeship Week! 🚜🌾 According to a 2022 study by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, 42 percent of the respondents said “worker skill” was a major barrier to expanding employment within their agricultural business. With this in mind, Kansas Farm Bureau developed the first registered apprenticeship program focused solely on agriculture and rural communities with the Rural Kansas Apprenticeship Program.
