A new methodology to accurately capture all A&E activity in weekly and monthly Public Health Scotland statistical publications will be applied from 4 February 2025. Not every department in the UK has moved to having some planned attendances (for instance, we haven’t in Leeds), but it is important that this data is included in the ED reporting figures as it continues to capture all attendances through an ED. What it shouldn’t be allowed to do is be used to directly offset poor admitted performance. This means ECS performance around admitted patients and for planned attendances (which will generally be of lower acuity) needs to be clearly set out in reporting processes. It will also be interesting to see how these work alongside colocated UTC’s and the differentiation between #ED and #UTC activity. https://lnkd.in/d5uBZVCQ

A critical element of translating new evidence into use by humanitarians is 'walking the last mile': integrating new research findings into tools, guidance and capacity-building materials that are suitable for practitioners and others working on the humanitarian front-lines (who do not have time to read journal articles and consider how to apply findings to operational response!). This online course (free, open and available in English, French, and shortly Arabic) is a great example in practice- produced by our incredible grantees at Humanity Inclusion, MSF and Karolinska. The team worked tirelessly on both research and operational engagement to make sure that the tools, guidance and learning materials meet practitioner needs. R2HC is proud to have supported this work which can help humanitarians support patients with traumatic injury to recover. FOR CLARITY: the link takes you to the DR homepage, but search for the course Activity Independence Measure – Trauma (AIM-T). Annoyingly you can only see the course details once you have logged in. #humanitarianhealth #traumacare #rehabilitation #emergencyhealth
We are pleased to recommend this new free online course for healthcare professionals who seek to better support patients following traumatic injury in crisis-affected contexts developed by Humanity & Inclusion, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Karolinska Institutet. This course teaches healthcare professionals a way to measure patients’ independence in daily life activities in crisis-affected contexts. Too often we find that trauma care in humanitarian settings is focused on saving life and limb, overlooking rehabilitation. Better equipped health professionals can make the difference in improving patients’ independence in daily life activities. How can improvement approaches support the current ambition for change? 💡 The 10-year plan for the NHS is scheduled to launch in spring. Q has been invited to draw on the expertise and experience within our community to explore the role improvement methods can play in the three ‘big shifts’ that the Government want to see: - from hospital to community - from sickness to prevention - from analogue to digital On 21 November, our workshop 'Improvement’s role in delivering the 10-year plan in England' will consider the broader role that improvement approaches and capabilities need to play in delivering the plan at all levels of the system. We’ll hear from Paul Corrigan, a senior advisor within the Department of Health and Social Care who is working closely with Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, to shape the plan. The workshop is already fully booked, but we’ll be sharing insight gathered from the workshop more widely – so stay tuned. https://brnw.ch/21wOMFh

With the current opportunity provided by #H5N1, we recommend all #hospital #emergencymanagement and #infectioncontrol professionals consider purchasing this book and read Chapters 1, 3, and 4. Note how fast inundation of the hospital (and broader hospital system) occurred and reflect how this might or might not look should H5N1 unexpectedly exhibit sustainable human-human transmission. Initial impressions: 1. It appears hospitals were unaware of the status of air traffic connectivity to COVID-active areas of the world in the weeks and months leading up to the first cases. 2. It was surprising to see the first meeting of the Critical Care Council was held on February 27, 2020. 3. It is not clear to what extent warning intelligence was shared with the hospital system beyond media reporting, social media, and public health guidance- and more importantly what elements of warning intelligence drove what response action decision points. Hindsight is utterly 20/20, and bravo to #NewYork for publishing their after action. The question becomes, if you had to do this over again in regards to managing the First Wave, what would you do differently? #COVID #healthsecurity https://lnkd.in/g_xfJvSR
