When my sons were in high school - and “figuring out” their futures - they and their friends would often ask me for advice about how to choose a career path, “get into tech,” or find success in a competitive industry. In honor of high school graduation season, here’s what I would tell them: 1. Embrace Curiosity: Cultivate a sense of curiosity and a hunger for knowledge that drives you to explore new ideas, ask challenging questions, and pursue answers that try to evade your reach. 2. Embrace Collaboration: Success in school and later in the workforce often hinges on collaboration and teamwork. Embrace diversity of thought and perspective and learn from the strengths of your peers as you tackle complex problems and pursue shared goals. 3. Embrace Resilience: The path to success is rarely linear. Be prepared to face setbacks and challenges, but don’t let them deter you. Cultivating resilience is the key to learning from failure and using it to propel you forward. As we celebrate the high school graduates in our lives, let’s remember the importance of investing in their future. Whether through mentorship, more formal education, or support for STEM initiatives, we all have a role to play in empowering the next generation of innovators and leaders.

Yesterday our CHROs received a warm welcome from our cohort leader and colleague, Brita Stevenson, before diving into topics of critical importance to first-time CHROs. We also explored perennial questions about leadership and purpose with our partner Aspen Institute Executive Leadership Seminars. Went through two rotations building a Spark cell in Southwest Asia. Absolutely phenomenal teams creating multiple capabilities and demonstrating effects to AF senior leaders like SecAF. But what truly makes me happy is after I left, the next rotation took the baton and ran with it through multiple more projects and finding a permanent home for innovators on the installation. What I’ve learned from struggling Spark cells to effective ones. 1) Transition window is critical to long term success. Leadership support matters. Especially with leaders that may not understand or want to deprioritize the effort. Innovation separates competitors quickly. It gives us an edge, but requires investments. 2) Anyone can innovate with the right mentor if the motivation is there. Innovation is like leadership—some are naturals, others learn. Both are successful especially when effectively supported. 3) Innovation and process improvement are like getting a set of glasses. It helps individuals see processes, management of resources, and the dynamics of teams more finitely. Contantly learn and play. Grow and have fun! If you’re a leader provide space, time, resources, and your knowledge to grow our future innovators. Help them get a second set of glasses. Long term success starts with small steps, hand-offs, building a home, creating a family, and investing into the future. So very proud of the team!
