Leadership isn’t reserved for big moments or grand gestures—it’s a way of being, present in every opportunity, great or small. At the Aspen Institute, our Seminars challenge participants to explore leadership as a practice that transcends titles and situations, shaping the way we show up at work, at home, and in our communities. The goal is not simply to do leadership but to live it with intention and purpose. Ask yourself: ▪️ What shifts can I make to embrace leadership as a practice, not just a position? ▪️ In what ways do I manifest leadership beyond my professional life? ▪️ How can I inspire those around me to see leadership as a way of being? As we welcome the new year, we find ourselves reflecting on the long view. In the rush of daily life, it’s easy to focus on immediate tasks and short-term goals. But today, we’re considering how the decisions we make now can ripple far into the future—building a legacy that outlasts us. How can we contribute to our organizations, communities, and families in ways that endure? How do our choices today shape the society we want to leave for future generations? These are not easy questions, but they are essential ones—especially as we seek to create something lasting and meaningful. Few organizations or individuals are built with the intention of lasting decades, let alone centuries. This year, we hope to embrace the long view and make decisions that will contribute to a future we may never fully see but that we deeply believe in. Here’s to a year of vision, purpose, and legacy. #NewYear2025 #Reflection #Leadership #Legacy #LongView #AspenInstitute #AspenLeadershipSeminars

As 2024 comes to a close, we at the Aspen Leadership Seminars reflect on a year of growth, challenge, and deep dialogue. This year, we were honored to convene leaders from diverse backgrounds to explore the profound questions that define leadership and legacy. Together, we’ve grappled with what it means to lead with purpose, clarity, and courage in a world that demands both immediate action and thoughtful consideration of the future. As we close 2024, we carry forward the lessons, insights, and connections that have shaped us. Thank you to all who have joined us on this journey of reflection and growth. Here’s to honoring the achievements of 2024 and continuing to build toward a meaningful and enduring legacy in the years to come. #Leadership #Reflection #AspenLeadershipSeminars #Legacy #EndOfYear

As we enter into a new year, it is a new opportunity to see what can add to the richness of life--whether as a leaders of a team or organization or as a member of a community or as an individual looking for what's next. How can we bring together the pieces of life, in this case of the humanities and science, to look at not only the larger picture but the trajectory that we are currently on as a result of the current status quo? How can we adjust our actions to move towards a more free, just, and equitable future?
"in separating the humanities and science, we are voting to blind ourselves for the future and to deplete the richness of multiple perspectives on reality...our now-isolated sciences are in danger of being kidnapped and reared as technology’s handmaiden." https://bit.ly/40agQlc

As leaders, the foundation of our actions often lies in the values we hold closest. Take a moment to reflect on this question: What values do you feel most grounded in? Understanding and articulating your core values is essential to leading with authenticity and purpose. Whether it’s integrity, empathy, or resilience, these values shape your decisions, guide your teams, and define the culture you create. How do your values influence your leadership style? Share your thoughts in the comments. #LeadershipReflection #CoreValues #AuthenticLeadership #PurposefulLeadership

Leadership isn’t just about acquiring the tactical skills of running a team or organization—it’s about something much deeper. In our Aspen Leadership Seminars, we embrace Leadership Formation as the active, collaborative process of cultivating habits of mindset and behavior that transcend roles, organizations, or contexts. It’s about self-discovery, values, and purpose, empowering leaders to navigate challenges with authenticity and clarity. While leadership development hones skills for specific tasks, Leadership Formation is a lifelong journey that equips you to lead in ways that align with who you truly are, no matter the situation. What’s your next step on the path of Leadership Formation?

This December we’re turning our focus to the transformative power of community. As leaders, the strength of our impact often depends on the connections we foster and the communities we build. This month’s Legacy of Leadership newsletter explores how intentional relationships can combat loneliness, create shared meaning, and empower individuals to lead with purpose, including: ▪️ What We’re Listening To: NPR’s Short Wave episode, "Feeling Lonely? Your Brain May Process the World Differently." Discover how leaders can counteract isolation and build stronger, more connected teams. ▪️ Todd Breyfogle’s In Focus: The Executive Director of Aspen Leadership Seminars reflects on two decades of lessons learned from fostering self-aware, values-driven leadership. ▪️ Looking Ahead: How will you cultivate meaningful connections this December and carry that momentum into 2025? As the year comes to a close, we invite you to reflect on the relationships that matter most—both personal and professional—and how you can strengthen the communities you lead. Together, let’s build spaces where everyone feels valued and supported. Subscribe to the newsletter today and get December's edition in your inbox on Thursday: https://lnkd.in/eygJ-hih

When it comes down to it, the decisions leaders make are articulations of their values in action--moral decisions, not technical. As our Executive Director Todd Breyfogle mentions here, all too often we don't pause to identify what those values ARE or how they might come into tension when working with teams, organizations, and groups. By taking time to closely examine what we believe and, more importantly, why we believe it, we are better able to communicate, operationalize, and achieve along side those we lead. For Todd Breyfogle, thinking about leadership is a full-time job. Breyfogle designs and often moderates Aspen Institute Executive Leadership Seminars, which challenge participants in every field to achieve meaningful leadership growth through a critical examination of their core values. In this episode of In Session, Breyfogle shares a few of the lessons he has learned in almost 20 years of working with leaders in Aspen Institute seminars, including the importance of operationalizing values, leading with humility, and taking the long view when making decisions.
