Why was our Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in the Ruvuma landscape earlier this month❓ He spent time with the village game scouts (VGS) from all five participating WMAs to provide training on the Cluey app with the aim to improve data collection systems. The Cluey app is deployed to aid the VGS with collecting information on biodiversity, land incursions and deforestation. This data supports the enforcement of the village land use plans and enhances project operations. 👣 Follow us to learn more about how our forest protection carbon projects operate. #naturetech #communityled #naturebasedsolutions

Our new open-access paper is out in the latest Pachyderm issue! 👇 https://lnkd.in/g5dB4jwg We used participatory processes to understand how farmers conceptualize human #elephant coexistence, which then informed how we co-designed community workshops with local experts. We then developed 5 strategies to help mitigate negative human-elephant interactions. Understanding how to move from data collection with ecosystem actors to implementing sustainable solutions is vital to promote #HumanElephantCoexistence! #Conservation #ConservationBiology #CommunityConservation

On 24 June 2024, the Sangha Tri-national Trust Fund (FTNS) and Express Union Finance signed an historic collaboration agreement 🤝 as part of the ‘Market-based approach to promote community engagement for wildlife conservation and climate change mitigation in the TNS landscape’ project. Through this initiative, the microfinance is committed to facilitating the implementation of innovative savings and loan mechanisms for cocoa farmers in and around the official Lobéké National Park. According to the FTNS, this should help boost production and profits for these farmers, thereby contributing to the conservation and sustainable management of the TNS's biodiversity. 🌱 What is this agreement all about? 🌱 Why is it so important for Lobéké cocoa farmers? 🌱 How will it be implemented? Find all the answers in this short video!

Biodiversity Net Gain is the biggest change to #planning regulations in decades. It is a mandatory condition of #planningpermission and aims to contribute to the preservation and growth of wildlife habitats following real estate #developments. Hana Ghale in our #RealEstate team provides answers to some of the questions most frequently asked about #biodiversitynetgain to help #propertydevelopers prepare for and navigate this new requirement. #hamlinsllp #propertylaw #realestatelaw https://lnkd.in/ezFPQKmZ

A really interesting Podcast by the #ECOChamber team where Nat Duffus (Oxford) reflects on her research into the relationship between #BNG and #invertebrate biodiversity (19.40 min. onwards). https://lnkd.in/dk5fchFY Headlines - 🐞 BNG grassland type & condition aren't necessarily a good proxy for invertebrate diversity & abundance. Particularly for non-priority grasslands in the metric. 🦋 There is a case for tweaking BNG condition scoring to better reflect invertebrate habitat quality. 🐛 BNG field data should be bolstered with additional data on inverts using tech (e.g. eDNA) or survey. Or - my view - shifting data collection effort away from finding relatively common protected species in some cases!? 🪱 A case for including connectivity to the metric [Didn't they try this for metric 2.0? It's quite an abused, misused and misunderstood concept in my experience....] 🐝 "BNG is not a tool for conservation, it's a tool for compensating for harms on the environment". This point is so often forgotten in my view. 🐜 Two key tips for making BNG a success - 1) scale-up resources in local planning authorities: "We can design a metric that's perfect. But if the monitoring and enforcement isn't happening, then it falls flat". 2) Create a more transparent off-site BNG register that can be independently monitored.

Have you heard? 😮 Applications for developments submitted before 12 February 2024 must deliver a biodiversity net gain (BNG) of 10%. The new legislation seeks to ensure new developments help (not hinder) wildlife habitats — and can be pretty difficult to comply with unless you've got the right lighting design, with obtrusive light detrimental to birds, mammals and plant reproduction. That's why we suggest coming to us — lighting planning experts experienced in producing environmentally friendly schemes — before you embark on your next project! "Losing our forest would be like losing our lives": Reviving the Mojirau Wildlife Management Area in East Sepik Province For over 40 years, the rich and unique biodiversity of the Mojirau Wildlife Management Area in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province has been threatened by unsustainable forest practices. Due to a chronic lack of resources, the local communities have struggled to protect the area's 5000 hectares of primary forest. Last year, the UNDP supported PNG Biodiversity and Climate Fund provided some much-needed funding for the Turubu Eco-Forestry Group, which reactivated a community-led committee to manage the area. Today, the Turubu Eco-Forestry Group is leading local indigenous communities in developing sustainable livelihood projects, which will generate income for the communities without harming the environment on which they depend on. Watch the video below to learn more from the leaders of the group! Global Environment Facility UNDP in Asia and the Pacific Turubu EcoForestry Dev. SMART Monitoring Systems used by rangers in Nsumbu: Conserving wildlife and maintaining biodiversity is crucial in ensuring a sustainable future. Employing technology to bolster conservation efforts is pivotal, and Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme is utilizing state-of-the-art tools. With a fully equipped control room manned by skilled operators. Utilizing SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) and EarthRanger, rangers can effectively track and monitor wildlife and patrol teams out in the field. These tools enhance data collection and storage and enable real-time alerts to our rangers, empowering swift and informed responses to potential threats. Through the diligent efforts of the NTCP, we have implemented a rigorous verification process to streamline data entry and mitigate errors. The occurrence of input errors within our databases has significantly decreased, leading to improved data accuracy and operational efficiency. Thus, SMART technology helps @NTCP with precision and efficiency in safeguarding the natural heritage.
