🌍 Addressing Climate Change: Local Solutions for a Global Challenge 🌱 At Antaris, we believe sustainable solutions require thoughtful consideration, not quick fixes. While Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) may seem like a promising decarbonization option, our latest position paper explores its complexities and highlights critical sustainability challenges, including: 🚢 The impact of importing feedstocks like used cooking oil (UCO) 🌴 The hidden environmental costs of palm oil substitution 🔍 The risks of fraud in supply chains HVO can play a role, but it's not a silver bullet. Instead, we advocate for transparency, rigorous certification, and a balanced approach to decarbonization. 📖 Read the full paper on our website: https://lnkd.in/dHa_XHRs 📩 Get in touch with us to explore our services: https://lnkd.in/eDwGPYPq

I was glad to appear on Al Jazeera English to discuss not just Delhi's air pollution crisis, but also to comment on the ongoing negotiations at #COP29 in Azerbaijan. 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳, 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘣 𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. 𝘠𝘦𝘵, 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦? 𝐎𝐧 𝐂𝐎𝐏29: ◾ We're halfway through the COP29 climate conference, and climate finance negotiations in Azerbaijan remain at a deadlock. ◾ These conferences reveal that they often act as a double-edged sword—an essential platform for dialogue, but also a source of deep frustration due to persistent gaps between promises and action, and an avenue to legitimise greenwashing. ◾ One of the most pressing issues at COP29 has been financing. Developing nations, especially those like India with one of the lowest per capita emissions, continue to face barriers to accessing the climate finance needed to transition to sustainable pathways. Despite contributing relatively little to the global carbon footprint, our emissions will inevitably rise unless we receive adequate support. ◾ Instead of pinning all our hopes on COP conferences alone, we must leverage other platforms like the #G20, #CHOGM and the Subsidiary Bodies (SBs). These forums can play a critical role in driving collective action, especially for developing countries caught between growth imperatives and climate responsibilities. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘣 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵? 𝐎𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐡𝐢'𝐬 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬: ◾ Meanwhile, air pollution in New Delhi has rendered the air hazardous, with the AQI touching unprecedented numbers. ◾ In Delhi, air pollution is a complex issue that's often oversimplified. The issue of stubble burning makes for great political fooder, but we often forget the real contributor to our worsening air quality is vehicular emissions— which is amplified by challenging meteorological conditions. The bottom line is, without greater global cooperation and the operationalisation of climate finance, the ambitions set at COP will remain just that—ambitions. 🌱 Hear my complete thoughts on the issue in the video below. 🌍 The global food system accounts for about one-third of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, with meat and dairy alone contributing 14.5%. This week at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, global leaders and experts are addressing urgent climate challenges. 🌱 While energy and industry often take centre stage, this year's discussions also focus on the critical role of food systems in driving emissions—and their potential as part of the solution. Two days ago, COP29 Food, Agriculture, and Water Day highlighted the urgency of transforming food systems to better serve people and the planet. 🌾 💡 At the Action On Food Hub, EIT Food, ProVeg International, and Future Economy Forum, in partnership with the High-Level Climate Champions, are working to amplify the Food Systems Call to Action and drive progress on sustainable food systems. How do you think global policies can tackle the food-climate challenge? Should we focus on #innovation, #sustainablefarming, or #shiftsinconsumption? 💬 What actions do you think #COP29 should focus on to reduce the climate impact of our food systems? In her article on the importance of investing in nature, Razan al Mubarak, President of IUCN and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, writes about the critical work of Tropical Forest Alliance: “Net-zero targets cannot be met without action on deforestation yet a number of key companies and financial institutions are persistently ignoring their role in exacerbating the problem. This needs to change and leaders within the sector are demonstrating how, with initiatives like Tropical Forest Alliance playing a pivotal role in galvanising the finance sector on this critical issue.” https://lnkd.in/g5EKshu6 #COP #Finance #Deforestation

💰 It’s time for a climate finance reset at #COP29Azerbaijan! 🌍 Food systems are vital for a sustainable future but remain critically underfunded. While public climate finance has increased overall, the portion allocated to food systems has dropped to just 2.5%, and sustainable food systems receive just 1.5% of public climate finance❗ This new report, developed together with the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, reveals the urgent need to scale up climate finance by 10x to $500B annually to transform food systems and build resilience for those on the frontlines of the crisis—smallholder farmers, fishers, and Indigenous Peoples. 🌱 Key actions for resilient food systems include: ✅ Phase out fossil-fuel-based agrochemicals ✅ Shift to renewable energy in food processing ✅ Redirect harmful subsidies toward sustainable practices like agroecology ✅ Support local and Indigenous food systems The New Collective Quantified Goal (#NCQG) is a pivotal opportunity to channel resources where they’re needed most—food systems adaptation and mitigation. 📖 Discover actionable strategies to drive impactful change: https://lnkd.in/dMnKcddZ #ClimateFinance #ClimateAction #FoodSystemsTransformation COP29 Azerbaijan haseeb bakhtary Sara Minoli Lauren Baker Matheus Alves Zanella
