The #climate challenge is not just an environmental challenge, it is a human challenge. And #education plays a vital role in combating the climate crisis. This week, during the first ever #COP29 Human Development Day, UNESCO is proud to have launched the Baku initiative on human development for climate resilience with key partners such as the COP Presidency (Azerbaijan), Adaptation Fund, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Green Climate Fund, International Labour Organization, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), IOM - UN Migration, The Global Fund, UNICEF, UNIDO, UN Women and World Health Organization. At the heart of this initiative are the Baku guiding principles underscoring two key aspects of education for climate resilience. 1.     𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Education must empower individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to create sustainable solutions. Engaging the minds, hearts and hands of every learner is essential to make them climate ready – and it all begins with greening education.   2.     𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. Schools and education systems are vulnerable to climate disruptions. Learning environments need to be adapted to better cope with climate shocks and learners suffering from displacement and school closures need to be able to continue their learning. The new global standards for greening schools and curriculum, recently released by UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership, provide concrete steps for countries to transform their education systems. As complex problems require collective solutions, the Baku Initiative represents a major step forward for greater collaboration and impact. Because partnership is the new leadership. An innovative perspective on how education can be transformed to address the pressing social, economic, political and ecological crisis is the biggest challenges of our time.

❓How can scalable, evidence-based solutions in education support climate resilience?❓ A huge thank you to the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies and all the panellists this morning for a thought-provoking policy dialogue on the intersection of climate change and education ahead of #COP29. It was inspiring to hear diverse perspectives on how education can play a vital role in climate action.🌍 We had the opportunity to share insights from our work in northern Nigeria. We’re leading a consortium of wonderful partners that includes Fab Inc and The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre to deliver on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office funded Research on Climate Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services (R-CRIBS) project. Here are three key insights:   📈 Scalability is essential: effective solutions must be simple and affordable, otherwise they cannot scale. 📚 Evidence matters: prioritising evidence will ensure the right interventions are chosen to build climate resilience at scale. 👩🏫 Learning must remain central in any decisions: climate education work should be targeted and cost-effective, focused on improving holistic learning. Attending today’s Global Gateway High Level Event on Education as all discussions are set for reaching the SDG4. The EU responded with dedication by taking leadership at the 2022 Summit, committing at least 10% of its international partnerships budget to education, and prioritising education and research under the Global Gateway Strategy. This strategy focuses on addressing global challenges in line with SDGs by fostering smart, clean, and secure connections across the digital, transport, energy and climate-relevant, as well as health and education sectors. 🌍 Excited to share that I attended the UNESCO-UNFCCC UN Webinar Series on Climate Change Education for Social Transformation Season 3: Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems’ Capacities on the Road to COP29! 🌱 This webinar series, running from May to December 2024, is a continuation of the impactful conversations from the previous seasons. It focuses on the crucial topic of greening teacher training and enhancing education systems' capacities to deliver quality climate change education. This initiative is a part of the broader ACE Hub, launched by UNFCCC and North Rhine-Westphalia, aimed at fostering education, public awareness, training, and participation in climate action. The discussions highlight the challenges across all education levels—early childhood, primary, secondary, and tertiary—bringing together diverse perspectives from teachers, educators, young people, and policymakers. The aim is to find concrete solutions for integrating climate change and sustainability into teaching and learning, ensuring our education systems are prepared for a sustainable future. With the alarming findings from UNESCO that many national curricula lack climate change content, and a significant portion of teachers and youth feeling unprepared to address this critical issue, initiatives like the Greening Education Partnership are more important than ever. This global initiative, launched at the UN Transforming Education Summit in 2022, supports countries in integrating climate change education and action, striving to "get every learner climate-ready." The third season focuses on strengthening policy, planning, financing, and the capacities of educators and policymakers to create climate-resilient education systems. 🌍 Reflections on “The Future of Climate Change Education: An Intergenerational Dialogue” at COP 29 Today , I had the honor of delivering the opening remarks for The Future of Climate Change Education: An Intergenerational Dialogue, hosted by the Education Above All Foundation, in collaboration with UNESCO and UNDP, at the State of Qatar Pavilion. This session was a powerful reminder of the critical role education plays in shaping a sustainable, climate-resilient future. Our discussions emphasized that education is not just a tool for knowledge transfer but a catalyst for meaningful climate action and sustainable development. As I highlighted, at Education Above All Foundation we firmly believe in the transformative power of quality education. Yet, facing the climate crisis demands that we think beyond traditional methods. We must empower youth with a holistic education that integrates climate science, critical thinking, and values that prepare them to lead and innovate sustainably. A crucial part of our mission is to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in climate education. We aim to reach the most marginalized and vulnerable communities, ensuring no one is left behind. In collaboration with our global partners, we are committed to building resilient, formal and non-formal educational systems. These systems must equip youth to confront climate challenges head-on, transforming them from passive beneficiaries to active agents of change. Together, let’s continue to redefine climate education to be intersectoral and crosscutting, leveraging both indigenous knowledge and cutting-edge technology to foster a new generation of climate leaders. Education is the seed, and climate action is the harvest - it’s time for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to cultivate change. As COP29 Azerbaijan unfolds in Baku, Azerbaijan, conversations about the role of HEIs in addressing climate change couldn’t be more urgent. One of the most powerful avenues identified at COP29 is the role of research and innovation at HEIs. Institutions like Oxford Net Zero and initiatives emerging from Africa highlight how universities can create scalable solutions to combat climate challenges #globally. At the IC3 Movement, we witness the incredible power of #education to transform not just #careers, but lives. Seeing #youngleaders step up through sustainability-focused curricula, student-driven projects, and community outreach reminds us: the future isn’t just in their hands, it’s in ours to empower them. As educators, we must ask ourselves: → How can we embed climate literacy in education systems? → What partnerships can HEIs forge with industries to translate research into action? → Are we doing enough to prepare the next generation to lead in a sustainable world?
