Thanks for having me at FutureNet World on this panel "Accelerating the journey to Cloud Native and 5G monetisation" hosted by Caroline Chappell with Suzana Grujev Pål Grønsund and Ignacio Gonzalez. I really appreciated this panel as it was held in the #Business track and covered #CloudNative, which has been my main topic for a few years now.
It was the opportunity to remind how much the Cloud Native journey is both #strategic and #critical for us at Orange. As a multi-country telecom operator, we are in the process of transforming to a #horizontal #model to leverage operational #efficiency, #skills mobility and raise the bar in #automation and delivery of our network services. For us, at #infrastructure level, the horizontal model is a cloud native one. To fuel our strategy, we are a founding member of the Linux Foundation Europe's Project Sylva, which is the cornerstone of our Orange Telco Cloud #OTC strategy, offering multiple deployment options from a single industrialised platform. But infrastructure is only one piece of the puzzle, we won't be cloud native without covering the #deployment strategy with our Network Integration Factory #NIF and the appropriate operational model. And above all, we need true cloud native network capabilities from our partners. To accelerate this journey, we also decided to strongly support the pivot of our industry by participating in ecosystems like NGMN Alliance or The Linux Foundation #Networking (Anita Döhler and Arpit Joshipura were in the audience).
On the #5G monetisation part, during our discussion we talked about slicing, the potential of API, MPN and connecting edge to BtoB or even BtoBtoX, which we see all these more as an incremental roll over transformation. It was the opportunity to bring 3 thoughts:
1. I truly believe that the 5G #killerApp or service is not yet here nor invented to cover the level of investment of our industry,
2. The network #APIs are an opportunity to leverage our telco assets to address direct or indirect through aggregators, but the size of the cake is uncertain, just remember that the connectivity leader of the market, Twillio, is a $4+ B revenue company.
3. Most importantly, our main challenge is to make the #invisible, #Connectivity, #visible and valuable again (we have a problem with "underlay" naming, not visible is not "valuable").
In all this story, Cloud Native is the right technical bearer, bringing 4 super powers (resilience, self-healing, closed loop reconciliation and drift management) if it's used in conjunction with the right operating model, #GitOps. I'm more concerned about how our industry will transform to have new business value pockets than our ability to go Cloud Native, even if we need to unite as telco peers to support the move of the whole ecosystem...and personally, it is what makes me wake up every morning 🚀
