Efficient parking for safer streets and greener cities 🌳🚗 🔍The German car park association found put that 75 % of Germany’s 1.42 million managed parking spaces are in multi-story car parks. This efficient arrangement saves 10.3 km² of urban space - equivalent to 1,430 football fields. ⚽️ In many large cities such as Cologne, local authorities are continuously exploring innovative ways to improve infrastructure and mobility. One effective solution are multi-storey car parks. These structures free up valuable roadside space for bike lanes, green areas, and pedestrian zones - key elements of shared public space. By clearing some space on streets, cities can enhance public safety, improve traffic flow, and promote sustainable mobility. Thanks to their central locations and usually ‘round-the-clock’ availability of car parking spaces, multi-storey car parks also reduce through traffic and traffic searching for parking spaces in inner-city areas. Reducing parking at the roadside also increases safety and visibility, especially for pedestrians and cyclists: according to accident research, around one in five accidents involving this group of road users occurs in connection with vehicles parked at the roadside, as this can obscure important lines of sight. In case you missed it: Senior Associate Transport: Peter Malley’s article, ‘Dominance of the 16-metre cross road section,’ appeared in the autumn edition of the VPELA Revue. Peter is always looking for ways to optimise our transport system and his article pointed to the large amounts of road reserve used in new subdivisions catering solely to private vehicles. “There is a long-held belief by those working in growth areas that subdivisions must provide one on-street visitor car parking space per dwelling. This car parking is provided in addition to the double garage situated on each lot and the ability to accommodate another vehicle in the driveway within the garage setback. In essence we are essentially designing our subdivisions for a car parking provision of four spaces per dwelling.” He offered alternatives to the high percentage of bitumen being laid down, including greening landscape architecture, an increased housing supply, and converting footpaths into shared pathing to create more liveable areas. Anyone with a Detroit or Michigan connection is no doubt inundated with Michigan Central content at this point, so I'll beg your pardon for adding to it with this link to a Matterport virtual tour of the finished space. It was a lot of fun to work on this-- but also to see the project materialize over the past several years, having started with scans of the (very different) interior in late 2020 (you can tour those spaces, too!). When I first visited Detroit, one could simply walk into the train station. At the time, a number of elected officials and community leaders wanted to spend millions of (thoroughly limited) public dollars to demolish it-- a fate that continues to befall some of our region's most distinguished architectural gems- but that didn't happen here because of a good example of well-executed public-private partnership that sought to both preserve the building, create new space for public and private use, while developing new context around the site-- ranging from the stellar improvements to Roosevelt Park and the Southwest Greenway to proximal new development in housing and mixed-use spaces. Next up, maybe the current discussion in Lansing about a potential multi-billion dollar transit expansion initiative will return passenger rail to Michigan Central, at which point we'll be able to return the word 'Station' to the name, for a glorious, multimodal future of mobility for Detroit and beyond.
