“Fire mitigation through strategic fuel reduction is essential for restoring and maintaining healthy forest ecosystems.” This week, The Mountain Democrat published a commentary from EL DORADO COUNTY Supervisor and RCRC Board Delegate Lori Parlin and California Forestry Assn and CEO Matt Dias, discussing how overly dense forest negatively impact forest health, increasing tree mortality, and fueling devastating wildfires and smoke across the state. The authors emphasize how forest resiliency projects, like the proposed project from RCRC's affiliate entity Golden State Natural Resources, can enhance forest health, create jobs, and increase wildfire resilience. 🏔️ Investing in rural community wildfire programs is essential in mitigating the impact of wildfires. The Bureau of Land Management and other department bureaus are reinforcing their commitment to protecting communities, natural resources, and local economies from the catastrophic effects of uncontrolled wildfires. The U.S. Department of the Interior recently allocated $1.3 million through wildland fire management bureaus for firefighting equipment under the slip-on tanker pilot program. Recognizing the coordination North Tooele County in Utah has with Bureau of Land Management Utah, North Tooele Fire District is the recipient of a $93,000 grant to purchase three slip-on units. The failure over decades to properly manage forests to protect the town of Banff doesn’t bode well for the survival of the busy mountain mecca, said Dr. Cliff White, who retired as environmental science manager for Banff National Park in 2009. “It’s just so primed to burn, you can’t stop it — I don’t think Banff has time . . . Banff and Canmore are equally vulnerable and it’s a matter that we really need to get our heads around,” said White, now an environmental consultant with various projects in Canada’s oldest national park. “It’s going to take 20 to 30 years (to do proper mitigation), and Mother Nature’s going to beat Banff before that.” Jasper, he said “was probably the model community for the urban part of (wildfire prevention) and five kilometres outside the town to reduce fuel, but the next part of the puzzle was to reduce the next 10 to 15 kilometres.” “That’s the way it was for Slave Lake and Fort McMurray and Kelowna.” Both towns and national parks face a “perfect storm created by our ecosystem, bugs and beetles, fuel, climate change and urbanization.” Ideally, mountain towns such as Banff and Canmore would burn off tall grass and eliminate much more combustible conifer trees within their boundaries in favour of safer poplars and aspens, said White. 🔗https://lnkd.in/g67f-3QX #forestfires #wildfires #wildfire #forestfire #wildlandfire #wildlandfirefighter #fire #firefighting #fires #nature #smoke #forest #fireseason #wildfireseason #firefighters #firefighter

Caldor Fire recovery demonstrates how Emergency Forest Restoration Teams accelerate post-fire response. … While non-industrial private forests make up roughly a quarter of California’s forested land, they often don’t have any pre-established funding or plans for immediate restoration after a wildfire. To address this critical gap, the Task Force Action Plan (Action Item 1.14) calls for the establishment of Emergency Forest Restoration Teams (EFRTs) to help small private forestland owners recover their lands. California State Parks works diligently to steward its land, often combining wildfire resilience with ecological restoration. Calaveras Big Trees SP is a great example. Ascent recently helped CSP secure approvals of wildfire resilience projects at Mount Diablo SP and Tomales Bay SP using CalVTP.

California State Parks and partners support giant sequoias with over 900 acres of beneficial fire! … From October 29 to November 1, California State Parks with the assistance of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the USDA Forest Service treated 914 acres in the South Grove Natural Preserve at Calaveras Big Trees State Park with prescribed fire.
