Boxall (2013) identifies three conditions enabling the achievement of mutual gains in employment relations. These include: 1. capability match (the fit between the employer’s need for a competent workforce and employees’ need for a conducive work environment), 2. commitment match (the fit between the employer’s need for a committed workforce and employees’ need for job security and fair treatment), and 3. contribution match (the fit between the employer’s and employees’ perceptions of meeting their respective needs).

I’ve spent the morning writing employee communications to go with a forthcoming earnings announcement for a public client, and then clicked on a New York Times story to see that Boeing’s new CEO Kelly Ortberg is using his earnings call today as the core driver of his own work to align and inform employees. The fact is that too few companies understand the central role that Wall Street announcements can play in internal comms. Employees need to understand how their work factors in to the long and short term success of the company they work for. They’re also constantly evaluating whether this is still the place where they should be investing their time in pursuit of their own and their family’s security, so you have to be constantly earning their trust and commitment. More to the point, organizations that show the Street that they are actively working on employee engagement and loyalty are more likely to drive investor confidence than those who don’t. And if Boeing needs anything right now, it’s engagement, loyalty and investor confidence.
