Tip 3 Of 3 For Recruiting Top Global Product Marketing Talent Tip #3: Find the Right-Fit for the Specific Role Product marketing is a broad discipline. Depending on the product, portfolio and company needs, a product marketer may need to focus almost exclusively on launching new products… or out-marketing the industry-leading competitor… or advocating for customer needs … What’s important is to find a candidate with strong product marketing traits, but also someone suited to the specific role. I once had two great candidates for the same product marketing manager role – one with a portfolio playing catch-up to the industry’s technology leader. One candidate came from financial services and could work within the industry. But the second candidate came from a technology start-up. I hired the second candidate, but referred the first to another team where her skills would be better utilized (never waste great talent!). As a final thought, smart recruiting also means explaining the open role’s importance to the greater team and company overall. I always want my product marketers to feel like they won the job lottery by joining my team. Then my job is to carry through that experience once the new product marketer is onboarded. Reposting this in hopes to get more visibility. I hear the job market is tough out there - but I’m finding, so is recruiting! I'm hopeful that someone will see this post and pass it around and there will be more people interested in this Product Marketing role. It appears that the Product Marketing role is a fairly new role within the marketing department. Oddly, there have been very few resumes submitted. Of course, there has to be a reason for that. Maybe people are not seeing the posting, which I'm hoping by reposting and encouraging to share will help get this in front of more people looking for a product marketing role. The reason I’m making this assumption of product marketing being a fairly new role within marketing is due to the resumes that are coming in. They either… >have nothing to do with marketing - ok, I get that people switch careers, but, add a cover letter to let the recruiter know and maybe a bit about why you want to step into a marketing career. >have a background in product development but no marketing - I can see the correlation, but this is not a product development role, nor is it a product management role. This is a product marketing role with a lot of writing, storytelling, positioning, messaging, market research, developing marketing campaigns.... >have zero product marketing experience - again, I think a digital campaign manager could make a good fit, but, it seems that those resumes are getting lost in the shuffle because there is nothing on the resume that matches the job description. A cover letter could also help with this switch from running paid ads to product marketing. With all of that said, I’m hoping another share of this role will create more interest and spread the word. I don’t think a cover letter is necessary in all situations, but if the resume doesn’t at least resemble the job description, I think it’s a good supporting document. I also understand there could be other variables as to why so few resumes have been submitted such as salary range (hoping this is in the range for the role!), location (would prefer the person to be in or near Denver, CO), or even industry (That is what it is! And it's pretty cool!). Let me know if I’m missing the boat on this. Looking forward to growing this amazing team!

I'm helping a client hire their first Product Marketing Manager! 🎉 Here's some of the top things I'm keeping in mind: ⚡ How well does this person seem like they'll be able to manage multiple stakeholders with multiple perspectives and priorities? This is a core part of a PMM role at any organization, but it's particularly important for a single PMM at an organization that has multiple product lines or multiple audiences. ⚡Does this person have examples of doing good work in the midst of uncertainty? Uncertainty is no longer "unprecedented". It's now... Precedented? No matter what you call it, it's critical for people to be able to manage uncertainty. ⚡How well can this person influence others without having formal authority? This role doesn't have any formal leadership capacity, but they will need to influence a lot across the organization. Things like how/when/why we conduct product launches, what we're saying about the product, etc. If you're looking for a PMM role right now, I highly recommend that you prepare talking points for each of these. If you're hiring for a PMM role, what are you looking for that I missed?
