Tip 3 Of 3 For Recruiting Top Global Product Marketing Talent Tip #3: Find the Right-Fit for the Specific Role Product marketing is a broad discipline. Depending on the product, portfolio and company needs, a product marketer may need to focus almost exclusively on launching new products… or out-marketing the industry-leading competitor… or advocating for customer needs … What’s important is to find a candidate with strong product marketing traits, but also someone suited to the specific role. I once had two great candidates for the same product marketing manager role – one with a portfolio playing catch-up to the industry’s technology leader. One candidate came from financial services and could work within the industry. But the second candidate came from a technology start-up. I hired the second candidate, but referred the first to another team where her skills would be better utilized (never waste great talent!). As a final thought, smart recruiting also means explaining the open role’s importance to the greater team and company overall. I always want my product marketers to feel like they won the job lottery by joining my team. Then my job is to carry through that experience once the new product marketer is onboarded. I recently helped a VP of Marketing develop the job description for their team's first product marketing hire. What they got right from the start: * Level: It's a Director position * Salary: It's on the job description * Plan: The flow from recruiting to offer is baked * Value: They know the value of product marketing What I asked them to consider as they wrote the role: > Strategic Alignment and Role Clarity: * What are our primary objectives (OKRs), and how does a founding product marketer contribute to these goals? * Given our current product stage and market position, what specific duties will this role be responsible for vs. contributing to? > Skills and Experience Requirements: * Given the strategic significance of this role, which mix of skills (strategic, tactical, analytical) is crucial for success? * How critical is prior experience in specific areas (B2B vs. B2C, industry, target audience) for this role? > Cultural and Team Dynamics: * What are our company's core values, and how should these be reflected in a candidate's attributes and behaviors? * How will the founding product marketer interact with existing teams, and what are critical interpersonal skills? > Market Understanding and Customer-Centricity: * How vital is a deep understanding of the market and customers for this role, and what are our expectations regarding the ability to conduct and utilize market research? * What is the expectation of involvement in customer engagement and feedback for this position? Community building? > Leadership and Growth Potential: * As a member of the founding team, what leadership and team-building potential do we expect in the long term? * How is this role expected to evolve as the company grows, and what career pathways should we emphasize in the job description? > Success Metrics and Performance Expectations: * What key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics will define success for this role in the short and long term? * How do we balance the need for immediate tactical results with the strategic development of the product marketing function? > Flexibility and Evolution of the Role: * How adaptable does this role need to be in terms of changing responsibilities and focus areas? * How can we highlight the potential for role evolution in the job description to attract adaptable and growth-oriented candidates? When preparing to hire a founding product marketer, several key considerations must be addressed before publishing the job description. By outlining these elements, you will attract the right candidate and set them up for success. #ProductMarketing #Hiring #Recruiting

🚨Chaos in Product Marketing?🚨 It's officially been one month of unemployment for me, and honestly, it's been... weird. A friend is thinking about making a career change and was asking me about how to break into product marketing. One of her questions was about the skillset you need to land an entry-level role. I really had to think about that, because the product marketers I know are DIVERSE. With a few rare exceptions, most everyone has come up in another function entirely, or at least a different marketing discipline. (I can count on one hand how many PMMs I know that came out of college and landed PMM as their first gig.) Somehow, PMM is simultaneously one of the most specialized and generalist positions. The baseline skillset is pretty broad – market and customer research, segmentation, messaging and positioning, cross-functional launch planning, enablement, competitive, and so on. But not being experienced in all of these areas isn’t a deal breaker for the right company and role. This is the advice I gave her: Check out the certification programs from Product Marketing Alliance – it’s a great place to start understanding the ins and outs of PMM, and it will get you speaking the language of hiring managers. Lean in at your current job. Are there opportunities to work with Product Marketing? Showing your contributions towards a specific project or outcome goes a long when interviewing without having direct experience in the role. (She is actually already working with the PMM team at her company now, acting as a SME for a product her company is bringing to market in 2026.) Talk to your HR business partner to see if the company offers any job shadows opportunities or if they have any programs designed to help employees transition between departments. (I worked at a company once that had a philosophy of “lattices not ladders” and took advantage of it when moving from a B2C copywriting role into B2B content marketing for the corporate team.) And my last piece of advice, when searching for new role, look for jobs in industries where your existing experience is highly valued. Having deep knowledge of a specific industry can help you crack the door into PMM. #pmm #productmarketing

What should you look for when hiring your first product marketer? 👇 There are so many moving parts when hiring. ✅ Skills ✅ Behaviours ✅ Seniority ✅ Personality ✅ Working style ✅ Cultural fit ✅ Industry knowledge... But what about product marketing specifically....as it's a fairly 'new' role. Are there traits you should look for given the jobs unique aspects? As an experienced product marketer, it was great to hear from Liza Collin on this very question. I'd love to hear your thoughts... ...do you agree, disagree, what would you add? #productmarketing #hiring #recruitment

⏳ Building your PMM team but need support now? Hiring the right product marketing talent takes time. But what happens in the meantime? Critical initiatives can lose momentum, leaving businesses stuck at a standstill. This is part of a trend we’ve noticed more and more at Olivine Marketing, as companies become clearer about their needs. One specific gap we’ve seen repeatedly is the need for interim PMM support, someone to step in and build the foundation while the search for permanent talent is underway. A Series B SaaS company recently came to us mid-search for their first product marketing manager. They had a major product launch on the horizon but no one in-house to drive the strategy or execution. In six months we helped them: - Build their go-to-market strategy - Develop key sales collateral - Establish processes that their new PMM could pick up on day one By the time their PMM joined, they didn’t need to play catch-up, they hit the ground running with a strong foundation already in place. As companies continue to refine their understanding of what they need in product marketing, we expect this trend to grow. It’s not just about keeping things moving, it’s about setting the right groundwork for future success. If you’re building your team and need someone to step in quickly, we’re here to help. Let’s talk. #ProductMarketing #HiringChallenges #GoToMarket #StartupGrowth #B2BMarketing #ScalingTeams #BusinessGrowth #MarketingStrategy

It's probably not the most conventional job search strategy to advertise what I CAN'T do, but hey, who said I was conventional? Since adding the green banner to my profile, I’ve taken time between networking conversations and application submissions to reflect — figure out what I’m good at, where I have gaps and how I can work to fill them, what energizes me, and what drains me, so I can be more intentional with my job search. In the spirit of radical transparency (and because I can never resist a good feature comparison chart), I present to you: "My PMM Feature Chart: The Good, The Bad, and The 'I'm Working On It'!" 📊 Why lay it all out there? Because in the fast-paced world of Product Marketing, with a talent pool that's bigger and more impressive than ever, knowing your strengths is important, but understanding your growth areas? That's the secret sauce to continuous improvement and innovation. 🤫 As a PMM, you’re expected to do it for your brand and your products — why not for yourself? I'm not just looking for a job; I'm seeking a long-term opportunity where I can plant my roots, leverage my startup experience, flex my cross-functional superpowers, and further sharpen knack for crafting killer GTM strategies. And yes, where I can also level up in areas like pricing strategy, launch standardization, or even international market expansion. So, if you’re looking for a PMM who brings a mix of proven skills, a hunger to learn, and a bit of unconventional thinking paired with endless curiosity, let’s chat! After all, the best products — and product marketers — are always evolving. 💡 #ProductMarketing #B2BSaaS #CareerGrowth #ProductMarketingManager #PMM

This is what employers ACTUALLY care about when hiring the best product marketing manager for their company 👇 1. 👻 Ambiguity Management: Can you quickly apply strategic thought and process to a ***huge*** gray area? 2. 🤸♀️ Flexibility: As you collect feedback and reporting on the product, you may learn that the math ain't mathing after all ( 😫 )...What you originally planned may have to be tweaked, or completely reworked. You gotta learn to accept this without losing your marbles. 3. 📈 GTM Success: You'll need to prove that you're intimately familiar with competitive analysis, identifying market gaps, and product launch timing and execution. How do YOU take a product from proof-of-concept to real life? 4. 👷♂️ ➡ 👩💻 Pipeline Creation: So, you know what the endgame is. It's your job to implement the "how", and get **every** team motivated, aligned, and focused. 5. 😤 😁 Stakeholder Management: Managing expectations while keeping everyone happy is a seriously underrated skill--especially when we're talking about the ones who cut the checks. 😅 Interviewing can be tough, especially if you're unsure what interviewers are actually curious about. Remember: anticipate, don't improvise. #PMM #ProductMarketing
