25 Mar 2024: Busy at work? Sometimes what you need is just a simple activity to give back and your mind will feel "moderated" and better "balanced" ie one of stress management techniques. Doing good together surprisingly enables you to reflect subconsciously that our current "challenge" is not a big deal after all, there are more people out there who needs help and the energy from the Group is high! 🤝 The Power of Befriending: Building Connections That Last a Lifetime 🤝 In our befriending service, we witness the incredible impact that simple human connection can bring. Befriending does more than alleviate loneliness, it creates genuine friendships, builds confidence, and transforms lives. Some of our volunteer partnerships have grown into decade-long bonds. What began as an hour given to a stranger has blossomed into a meaningful, enduring friendship. For many, our volunteers’ support is a lifeline. Here are just a few examples: • Weekly chats: Some clients simply enjoy a phone call or a cup of tea at home, sharing stories and laughter. • Shared adventures: Others find joy in bus trips together, exploring new places they might not have felt confident visiting alone. Every visit, every call, every small moment shared is a reminder of the importance of connection. Founding and scaling GearUp has taught me a lot about managing people. If you think retaining paid employees is tough, try managing volunteers. The passion of volunteers must more than compensate to keep them involved, even in tough times. I have learned with my team that there are three key ingredients to a successful volunteer: passion, skill, and discipline. A passionate person without skill will get nothing done well; they will only engage in exciting discussions. A skillful person without discipline will not be able to carve out time from busy schedules to do the unpaid work they are passionate about. We have only seen success with people who possess all three qualities. Yet, it is still difficult to adequately assess these traits until volunteers begin the work themselves.
