Thank you, Nicole Machado, for the opportunity to be part of this incredible experience! It was my first time volunteering at a food drive, and the energy and dedication of everyone there truly moved me. Seeing the excitement of people coming together to donate to the local food bank really highlighted the impact we can make when we unite for a good cause. Here are a few reflections from this memorable experience and how we can carry these lessons into our daily lives and work: The Power of Teamwork: Watching everyone work side by side, each person adding their unique contribution, reminded me how much more we can achieve together than alone. It’s a great reminder that teamwork is at the heart of meaningful progress. Small Actions Make a Big Impact: Every item donated, no matter how small, contributed to the bigger picture. This is true at work as well—small, consistent actions add up. By focusing on small, impactful tasks daily, we can drive productivity and see real results over time. Resilience: Coordinating and carrying out a food drive takes dedication and persistence. When challenges arise, we need resilience to push through—whether we’re stocking shelves or tackling a big project at work. Never Giving Up: There were moments when it seemed overwhelming, but everyone kept going because they believed in the cause. In work and life, when we stay committed to our purpose, we can overcome obstacles that seemed impossible at first. Support for a Right Cause: When you’re working toward something that genuinely helps others, people naturally want to pitch in and be part of the movement. Having a clear, meaningful purpose invites others to support and uplift you, both in community efforts and professional goals. Thankful for the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than myself and for the chance to reflect on these values. Looking forward to putting them into practice every day!

National Food Bank Day is observed on the first Friday of September. This year, it falls on September 6, 2024. It's a day dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity and the vital role food banks play in supporting individuals and families in need. Hoover Ingredients is a supporter of our local food banks, and we would like to encourage everyone to contribute to the cause by donating food, funds, or volunteering their time. National Food Bank Day is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community. Here are a few ways you can get involved: Donate Food Check your pantry: Donate non-perishable food items like canned goods, pasta, rice, and peanut butter. Organize a food drive: Gather friends, family, or coworkers to collect food donations. Shop for food: Purchase items on your local food bank's most-needed list. Volunteer Your Time Help sort and pack food: Many food banks rely on volunteers to help distribute food. Assist with food drives: Volunteer to help collect and distribute food during food drives. Help with other tasks: Some food banks may need help with administrative tasks or outreach. Donate Money Make a financial contribution: Monetary donations can be used to purchase food, pay for transportation, or support other essential services. Start a fundraiser: Organize a fundraiser, such as a bake sale or a raffle, to raise money for your local food bank. Raise Awareness Share information: Spread the word about National Food Bank Day and the importance of food banks on social media. Educate others: Talk to your friends, family, and coworkers about food insecurity and the ways they can help.

Just prior to Christmas, S Harrison Developments Ltd delivered over 2000 vital food items (weighing over 950kg!) to York Foodbank to help meet growing demand over Christmas and the New Year – with a little extra help from Tesco. “At the beginning of December we were down to just a week’s stock of staple items liked tinned vegetables and fruit, and long life juices,” explained foodbank manager Adam Raffell who was on hand to receive the Harrison delivery at the foodbank’s Clifton Moor warehouse. “In the face of growing poverty in the city, we depend on donations from individuals and businesses like S Harrison to meet demand. Christmas is a time for giving, but it is vital that we build stock for the New Year too. Donations tail off in January and beyond, but demand remains high. We really appreciate Harrison, along with others, stepping in to help and replenish vital stocks in this way.” It is the fourth year that Harrison has supported the Trussell Trust York Foodbank, each time with the help of Tesco at Clifton Moor. Says Harrison’s Andrew Wharton: “No-one should go hungry at Christmas or any other time of the year. At Adam’s request, we have focused our donation on buying tinned carrots, peas, sweetcorn, potatoes and other staple goods. So we were delighted when Tesco stepped in to supplement our donation with gifts of their own - Christmas puddings and selection boxes to add some festive cheer.” Property and development company S Harrison, with headquarters at the Chocolate Works in York, is the business behind a number of award-winning residential, student and commercial developments in the city, including West Offices for City of York Council. Says Andrew Wharton: “We believe the developments we deliver genuinely enhance the communities we serve. But we also believe businesses have a wider role to play in supporting the communities in which they work. Each year, as part of that commitment, we link with local charities in this way.” This year, Harrison has also teamed up with a foodbank in Leith and Edinburgh-based charity Rowan Alba, which provides long-term housing solutions for those facing homelessness.
