Our elders and seniors deserve to live with dignity, while the nursing staff that cares for them needs the support to deliver quality care. Ensuring adequate nursing staff levels in nursing homes is critical to providing high-quality care, maintaining resident dignity, supporting family caregivers, and promoting job stability for care workers. As the Office for Health and Human Services continues advocate for the more than 1.2 million American nursing home residents, some critical national health policy implementations could improve the quality of life all around: Implementing Mandatory Minimum Staffing Ratios as research has shown that higher nurse-to-resident ratios are associated with better resident outcomes, which include lower rates of mortality and hospitalization. Setting a Mixed Skills Requirement which would provide a baseline for the number mix staff of registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) needed to provide quality healthcare for residents. Staff Training and Education opportunities that lead to improved care outcomes residents through investments in retaining staff members. Transparency and Accountability mechanisms which publicly report staff levels and quality indicators to drive improvements in quality care. Support for Family Caregivers that recognize their vital roles, provides the resources and assistance they need, and engages them in care planning and decision-making processes. Implementing Workforce Stability Initiatives that offer competitive wages, benefits, and career advancement among caregivers. Our elders and seniors have served our communities well, they deserve a healthcare system that treats them with dignity and compassion. Is that not something that you would want for your mother, your father, your grandmother, or your grandfather? Your loved ones deserve to live with dignity, where they have access to safe, high-quality care. That’s why HHS is finalizing rules for national minimum staffing standards — to ensure access to quality care for the over 1.2 million residents living in nursing homes each day. #CareWeek

Our handy ‘All About Me’ leaflet has been recently updated. The ‘All About Me’ leaflet is a useful document designed for people receiving professional care at home, in a hospital, in respite care, in a nursing home, or in a care home. You and your carer can use it to inform staff of your individual needs, preferences, likes and dislikes. Once filled in, you can hand it to anyone to inform them of your condition so they can be more informed about the care you require and your needs.
