The presence of the two startups within Esa Bic Brindisi, the first and only space startup incubator in southern Italy affiliated with the European Space Agency's network of Business Incubation Centers, was highlighted during MAM2024. Managed by DTA and supported by the Politecnico di Bari, the University of Bari, the University of Salento, several industrial partners and the Italian Space Agency, the program is co-financed by the Puglia Region. During the events, the first two startups to be incubated were presented. They are 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗼𝗻, a UniBa spinoff specializing in the development of solutions for the detection and environmental monitoring of radioactive elements, based on technologies used for deep space observation, and 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗦𝗮𝘁, a team composed of three young space engineers that focuses on the development of transceivers for cubesats and small satellites, with the aim of facilitating communication with satellites of large commercial Satcom constellations and improving the exchange of data to and from the ground. Digantara, a pioneering spacetech startup, has unveiled its state-of-the-art Satellite Assembly Facility in Bengaluru, signaling a monumental leap in space technology. Spread across an impressive 25,000 square feet in the vibrant Hebbal area, this facility houses a command and control center and a pristine cleanroom, serving as the heart of satellite assembly, integration, and testing (AIT). Digantara's current flagship project involves deploying a constellation of 40 space surveillance satellites. These satellites are poised to revolutionize global space traffic management by providing detailed qualitative and quantitative data. Their mission is crucial: to monitor space debris and other space-based assets, thus ensuring the safety and sustainability of space operations. The newly inaugurated facility stands out as Asia's first commercial Space Domain Awareness Command and Control Center. To go Beyond Earth, we will have to get Rendezvous and Servicing Operations #spacetech and #spacelaw correct. To do that, we should start by seeing if Steven Wolfe (Beyond Earth Institute) and Brian Lagana (CONFERS | The Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations) want to collaborate and collocate on #DCSpaceWeek in 2025. If they need some glue to make that work, I recommend Rich Hodge, who is also in DC and knows everyone in the #spaceindustry. Other Thoughts: (1) #Space infrastructure must be de-risked for commercial activities to take off. That derisking has three parts: economics, tech, and policy. (2) The new space race is also an effort in international cooperation. A $10T #spaceeconomy of the 2050s is big enough for the USA and its Allies to all win together. (3) ISAM, OOS, and RPO all relate back to doing groundbreaking and amazing new things with hard tech, but we have to think about how these tech roadmaps relate not just to #satellites but also to #spacestations.
