Like many government institutions navigating COVID-19, public library systems across the United States demonstrated agility, impressive outreach, and rapid digitization. Prompted by pandemic-era digital demands, Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Library (MCPL) system renewed their emphasis on digitally-enabled service delivery and supported a system-wide focus on digital inclusion. Post-pandemic, MCPL’s Digital Transformation and Collection Management teams are collaborating to redesign the library website’s information architecture, create a digital library card, and develop a mobile library application to increase use of library services. Lessons learned from the work thus far: 🔀 Enterprise-wide strategies are key enablers of digital transformation 📋 Org-wide staff are essential stakeholders 💡 Investing in open source expands capacity and mitigates technical debt ❤️ Accessibility considerations benefit all users. Featuring the voices of Maddie Hines Schellhardt, Raymond Bryson, and Emily Lamancusa, the latest in the DSN Spotlight series highlights the MCPL’s digital initiatives and emphasis on closing the digital divide.
