Our Chief Health Officer David de Gijsel recently presented at #INHSU2024 in Athens on the importance of treating hepatitis C by meeting people where they are. He shared the findings from a recent study by Better Life Partners, various academic institutions, public health agencies, and community partners, showing that immediate treatment for hepatitis C via telemedicine and a mobile van increases the odds of cure 4-fold compared to referral to a specialist. The full findings of the study are forthcoming, but you can read more here about the utility of a mobile van in this treatment approach: https://buff.ly/4eZTfIQ

Government advisor calls for NHS to pivot from treatment to prevention. Professor John Deanfield CBE said: “The NHS still operates according to its traditional, founding principles of 75 years ago, which is disease care. But we need to move to a system of upstream, preventative health intervention.” He added: “Our current approach to health is unsustainable, both for the health of the population and for the economy. A reorientation towards prevention is the only way to avert the growing health and wealth crisis.” The “size of the prize” for prevention was huge, Deanfield added. “It is estimated that applying known, evidence-based preventative interventions earlier and more broadly could add 20 more healthy days per person, per year, in the UK – a 33% reduction in ill health." In this area, as so many other parts of health, #diagnostics are the enabler - from cholesterol testing to genomics.

According to WHO, drug-resistant #TB is a “public health crisis.” This is because, in 2023, only 30% of the estimated 400,000 people with drug-resistant TB successfully completed treatment. To help more patients and #EndTB, expanding drug-resistant TB treatment within the private sector is essential for improving access to timely and accurate care. An important new PLOS Global Public Health essay uncovers a massive gap in TB care with major implications for access to medical oxygen - an estimated 92 million people living with post-TB lung disease. Like Mahapa in Lesotho (below), many need home oxygen to leave the hospital. But most don't get it because they are an invisible patient population. Here's how to change that: https://lnkd.in/etxGY8pW Kudos authors Chase Yarbrough, Mosala Zulu, Danielle Sharp, Afom Tesfalem Andom, Melino Ndayizigiye, KJ Seung, and Paul Sonenthal.
