#TECHNOLOGY | Exciting exchange with science! ESG-compliant companies are increasingly facing challenges such as data quality, data availability and unclear responsibilities in the implementation of sustainability requirements. With Maja Stojanović-Blab, PhD of Economics, Sustainability Officer, and Christoph Skornia, Vice President for Digitalization & Sustainability at OTH Regensburg, we therefore exchanged views on sustainability reporting and digitalization, because: The CSRD Directive is becoming mandatory for almost 15,000 companies in Germany! Together, we came to the conclusion that all large companies that are already required to report from the 2025 financial year, regardless of their capital market orientation, may no longer be on schedule if they only start the double materiality analysis now. Automation through digitalized and centralized data is therefore essential for efficient ESG reporting, which should be seen as an opportunity for companies along with the associated challenges. 🌟 We look forward to further exciting discussions with science and industry. 🌍 Earlier this year, a Communication from the European Commission on Advance Materials for Industrial Leadership, highlighted Energy as a key priority for advancing European R&I on this field. Alongside mobility, construction, and electronics, energy stands not only as a priority but also as an enabler for advancements in other sectors. 🚀 In the context on the ongoing collaboration between the Commission's Joint Research Centre and the #EuropeanInnovationCouncil - Project #FUTURINNOV - we hosted one more Horizon Scanning Workshop, this time with a focus on this field. This participatory exercise gathered insights from over 25 experts spanning academia, industry, and policy-making. Together, we: 🔹 Prioritized key topics within the synergies of advanced materials and energy 🔹 Explored contextual factors influencing the development and adoption of these technologies and innovations. 💪 It was again a privilege to work side by side with my colleagues - Antonia Mochan, Lourdes Rodríguez Rodríguez, Gwendolyn Bailey, Ph.D., Alexandre Pólvora and last but not the least the (now former) EIC Program Manager on Advanced Materials - Francesco Matteucci 👉 We’re thrilled to announce the publication of the workshop outcomes in our latest report. https://lnkd.in/dmdJaUgZ EU Science, Research and Innovation European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) #EuPolicyLab #CompetenceCentreOnForesight #TechnologyForesight

Letters From Europe The EU focuses on advanced materials for industrial leadership The EU Commission has launched a new initiative, "Innovative Materials for Europe," IAM4EU, involving experts from both the public and private sectors committed to the innovation of advanced materials, from production to processes to principles of circularity. These materials ensure superior performance essential for innovation across various sectors. Daniel Witthaut, Executive Director for Innovation at Cefic, describes IAM4EU as "not just a partnership, but a clear commitment to pioneering the future of advanced materials…to overcome the challenges of the green and digital transition." There are five objectives to be implemented among the EU Member States: strengthening the European research and innovation ecosystem for advanced materials, rapidly bringing new materials to market, increasing investments and access to funding to promote the production and use of advanced materials, and creating a Technology Council. The European Commission's initiative is the first step in enhancing the industrial competitiveness of Italy and Europe on a global scale. Recent investments in semiconductor manufacturing sustainability are becoming a crucial focus across the industry, driven by environmental regulations and corporate responsibility initiatives. One key development is the U.S. government's plan to invest up to $100 million to support research and AI-driven technologies aimed at developing sustainable semiconductor materials and processes. This is part of the broader CHIPS for America initiative, which focuses on making the semiconductor supply chain more resilient and environmentally friendly. In addition to government support, companies like Samsung, Intel, and Tokyo Electron have made strides by adopting greener manufacturing processes. For instance, Samsung has developed a regenerative catalytic system (RCS) that reduces emissions from process gases. Intel is also working towards net-zero emissions by 2040, focusing on using renewable energy sources for its fabs. These investments reflect a broader trend in the industry toward sustainable practices, including emissions reduction, water recycling, and alternative materials to lower environmental impact. Many of these initiatives are not only about reducing environmental footprints but also addressing supply chain risks by localizing production and enhancing energy efficiency in regions like the U.S., Europe, and Japan, which are offering significant subsidies to attract investment.

Manufacturing is extremely tough to decarbonize due to how much material we use as humans. But we need to do it anyway. No matter how impossible the challenge seems, decarbonizing manufacturing, in part by scaling up carbon management technologies, is a crucial step to achieving net-zero emissions. Our approach at Breakthrough Energy is to break down the problem into more manageable subsectors and focus on key areas for tech solutions. For every subsector, a combination of these specific and cross-cutting solutions will likely be required to achieve net-zero emissions, especially because these technologies are at different levels of maturity and have different timelines for commercialization and deployment. Leaarn more about these subsectors in the animation below — and in our newsroom: https://nt-z.ro/3U3g7Of
