The team and I had the honor of presenting a Main Stage workshop at this summer’s American Probation and Parole Association’s Training Institute in Indianapolis. It was exciting to contribute to the conversation about what’s next for community supervision: addressing responsivity by first understanding the reasons someone engages in behaviors leading to system involvement (the “why”). Moving beyond a focus on risk (the “who”) and criminogenic needs (the “what”) is a pivitol shift towards full embrace of the RNR model and actionable system reform.

Maxine Swingler presented at the recent Advance HE Assessment and Feedback Symposium on 5th November on how students can use assessment criteria, rubrics, or exemplars to generate self-feedback. "Having students compare their work with assessment criteria, a rubric or an exemplar, then write their own self-feedback comments, can improve their performance in draft-redraft situations. Yet little is known about the differential effects of these comparators on learning itself. This was the focus of our research. Results show that students comparing their work with exemplars produced more high-level process comments and had better final grades, whereas comparisons with assessment criteria produced more task-related feedback comments. The implications are that by extending the range of comparators and through appropriate instructional prompts, teachers can target students’ learning and skill development."
