Friday Film Club: The Terminal - Finding Purpose and Connection in Uncertain Times   Welcome back to Friday Film Club! With Tom Hanks leading the way, you’ll find his films will be featured here, as I’ve long admired his knack for bringing depth and warmth to every character he plays. In The Terminal, Hanks captures the essence of resilience and hope, sharing a story about finding purpose and connection even when life leaves us utterly displaced.   Picture this: Viktor Navorski, a man from a small Eastern European country, arrives at JFK airport only to find his home country in political chaos, invalidating his passport. His world suddenly becomes restricted to the terminal unable to return home and barred from stepping foot on U.S. soil. Yet, Viktor doesn’t allow his circumstances to drag him into despair; instead, he begins to carve out a life in the airport, creating a routine, connecting with people, and finding small, meaningful ways to contribute.   As days blend into months, Viktor’s life within these walls evolves into something surprisingly fulfilling. What starts as a bleak situation turns into a journey of adaptability, purpose, and community. Viktor’s circumstances may be limited, but his outlook isn’t. It’s a testament to how resilience and a sense of purpose can flourish even in the most constrained spaces. He shows that we don’t always control our surroundings, but we can shape our experience within them.   From a positive psychology standpoint, The Terminal beautifully portrays resilience as more than mere endurance; it’s about finding meaning and connection in unfamiliar places. Viktor’s warmth and kindness breathe life into this sterile setting, turning a transient space into a place of belonging. He reminds us that we can thrive by staying true to our values and being present to those around us, even when life’s plans unravel.   If you’re a fan of Tom Hanks (there will be plenty more of his films here at Friday Film Club), or simply want a story about human connection and adaptability, The Terminal is a must-watch.
