🎄✨ Day 12 of RBR's 12 Days of Christmas – Investigating New Depths 🌊 On the final day of the 12 RBR Days of Christmas, we’re highlighting the remarkable work happening aboard the CSIRO research vessel #RVInvestigator, Australia’s only dedicated blue water oceanographic research vessel. Spanning 94 meters, the RV Investigator conducts science for ~300 days a year, exploring from the tropical waters to the north of Australia, to the icy edges of Antarctica in the south. As a multi-disciplinary vessel, its contributions to science are vast, but today we’re focusing on the CTD rosette, a cornerstone of its operations. This essential tool allows scientists to measure conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) — along with additional parameters from additional mounted sensors —down to depths of 6,000 meters with incredible precision. Complemented by water sampling from its 36 Niskin bottles throughout the profile, the data collected contributes significantly to assessing the health of our oceans. During a 2024 transit voyage from Fremantle, Western Australia, to its home port in Hobart, Tasmania, Research Scientist Mathieu Dever joined the expedition. Mat equipped the rosette with an array of RBRconcerto CTDs and other RBR sensors, to study the effects of pressure on measurements. Beyond adding a festive touch to the rosette (as you can see it looked very Christmas-like!), these deployments provided valuable data from the potentially crushing depths of 6,000 meters. The results continue to support innovation and have already contributed to several technical and scientific publications. From mapping seafloor habitats to understanding climate change impacts, the RV Investigator exemplifies how cutting-edge technology supports the critical work of ocean science. It’s the drive of our partners and customers to push scientific boundaries that inspires the entire team at RBR to innovate and support them every step of the way. As we wrap up our 12 Days of RBR Christmas, we extend our deepest thanks to the incredible scientists, researchers, collaborators, and partners who inspire us every day. Here’s to another year of advancing science, one expedition at a time! 🌏🎉 #12DaysOfRBR #RVInvestigator #OceanScience #MarineResearch #RBRglobal #CSIRO #InnovationInAction #ClimateScience 📸 Stefan Stimson 📸 Mathieu Dever

Here we are, already three years passed since the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) ! And to celebrate the ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners. From the 10th to the12th of April 2024, all involved in the Ocean Decade will present achievements and will set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. As chair of the European Marine Board, I would like to invite you to one of the satellite event : "Supporting a global collective vision for ocean science by matching regional priorities" which will be held in the Baltic Sea Room (122+123) at the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) from 8:30 am to 9:45 am on the 11th. The subject to be discussed during the event is focused on Regional structures playing a key role in guiding activities to support the achievement of the global Ocean Decade Challenges. For the first time since the start of the Ocean Decade, different regional ocean science organisations and initiatives (European Marine Board, IOCAFRICA, IOC-WESTPAC, IOCARIBE, IOCINDIO, and the Southern and Arctic Ocean Task Forces) will present their research priorities for the end of the decade, providing the pieces of the puzzle of the global ocean. The discussion will focus on matching, comparing and finding synergies between these priorities with the Ocean Decade Vision 2030 and finding avenues for future regional collaboration to deliver this vision. https://lnkd.in/eAKrydPg 🎧🐋🎶 Seiche has collaborated with Dr Outi Tervo of the Grønlands Naturinstitut and local stakeholders, to install an underwater acoustic observatory (or ‘Listening Station’) in western Greenland. "The Arctic has also become more accessible to human activities due to loss of sea-ice. One of these activities is increased shipping activity which is making the sea noisier. Since all marine mammals use sound for orientation, communication, and some for foraging, it is important to understand how rising background noise levels can disturb marine life. Connecting Science and Society DISKO Live is a project that aims to connect research with the public. By streaming the underwater sounds of Disko Bay, the project offers a new way for people around the world to connect with the Arctic's distant marine environment. We hope that the sounds you hear will both amaze and intrigue your curiosity." About Disko Live: https://lnkd.in/e5We5q7k https://lnkd.in/ec_HWMd3

After much preparation and work, two of the big BELSPO funded research projects, ULTIMO and FROID have departed the Princess Elisabeth station to spend a month deep in the field carrying out their respective research by the Belgica mountains and the Nils Larsen blue ice field! One team is hunting for meteorites at a location that hasn't been visited in nearly 50 years while FROID is searching for the world's oldest ice (1+ million years) by drilling shallow ice cores and running ground penetrating radar in the blue ice regions surrounding Nils Larsen mountain. Both projects have scientists from Université libre de Bruxelles and Vrije Universiteit Brussel working together to make new discoveries. As space agencies prepare to return to the #moon, scientists and engineers face the challenge of mitigating a major environmental hazard: dust. Charged dust-like particles pose a serious risk to the health of astronauts and to space instruments. The #HorizonEurope project DUSTER (for ‘Dust Study, Transport, and Electrostatic Removal for Exploration Missions’) is investigating the properties of lunar dust and developing an in-situ instrument that is able to cancel the adhesive effect of it. If you want to know more about it, go and check out our freshly published article in Science Connection n°70, available in Dutch and French: - on the #DUSTER webpage: https://lnkd.in/eS5zCz8Z or - on the #ScienceConnection webpage: https://lnkd.in/eCk3mt5v!
