Here we are, already three years passed since the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) ! And to celebrate the ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners. From the 10th to the12th of April 2024, all involved in the Ocean Decade will present achievements and will set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. As chair of the European Marine Board, I would like to invite you to one of the satellite event : "Supporting a global collective vision for ocean science by matching regional priorities" which will be held in the Baltic Sea Room (122+123) at the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) from 8:30 am to 9:45 am on the 11th. The subject to be discussed during the event is focused on Regional structures playing a key role in guiding activities to support the achievement of the global Ocean Decade Challenges. For the first time since the start of the Ocean Decade, different regional ocean science organisations and initiatives (European Marine Board, IOCAFRICA, IOC-WESTPAC, IOCARIBE, IOCINDIO, and the Southern and Arctic Ocean Task Forces) will present their research priorities for the end of the decade, providing the pieces of the puzzle of the global ocean. The discussion will focus on matching, comparing and finding synergies between these priorities with the Ocean Decade Vision 2030 and finding avenues for future regional collaboration to deliver this vision. It is with great pleasure and honour that I will be participating in the Seminar “The Future of Marine Spatial Planning: Facing Challenges and Driving Opportunities”. The Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in partnership with national and international institutions, organises, in the scope, of the Oceans20 Dialogues - “The Future of Marine Spatial Planning: Facing Challenges and Driving Opportunities”, scheduled to take place at in Rio de Janeiro, between August 20 and 23, 2024. The Oceans20 Dialogues in question will have three phases, Thematic Workshops, consolidation of the previous phase and a Seminar, and will involve scientists, professors, public and private sector leaders, sailors and executives, with the aim of promoting a broad dialog between the nations that with important elements that make up Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), as well as drawing up proposals for recommendations for the G20 Engagement Group on the Oceans (“Oceans20 - O20”). In addition, proposals for actions and/or recommendations will be identified with a view to contributing to the process of implementing MSP in Brazil and, possibly, in other countries, taking into account the best practices identified during the event. After a week at the 2024 #OceanDecade Conference, this is what Hub researcher and Empatheatre co-founder Dylan McGarry (Rhodes University, South Africa) concludes: "#OceanLiteracy can easily become scientific propaganda if it’s not tempered with ocean humanities and other ways of knowing and being and doing. There are many Ocean Fluent people; from small-scale fishers, to Indigenous healers, surfers, swimmers and children... We don’t need literacy in the sense that the west has described it, we need support and affirmation of existing ocean fluent people to govern and manage their own places. The #UN says “societal behaviour change” is needed. We must rather articulate the specific aspects of society that are threatening the ocean. It’s not an amorphous or monotonal threat - it is specific people, specific groups and specific industries." See a clip of Dylan's presentation from the Hub's event ⬇ During his presentation, Dylan refers to a five-minute film that explores an aspect of intangible ocean heritage and involved the participation of Indigenous knowledge holders from #SouthAfrica. 🎞 Watch the film 'Indlela Yokuphila: The Soul's Journey': https://lnkd.in/eRGMxHKQ #OceanDecade2024 #OceanDecade #OurOcean #OceanJustice UN Ocean Decade UNESCO Ocean

🧊 Science Diplomacy to support UK Arctic scientists in their work with Arctic partners 🌐 We are proud to highlight an impact story from our Science and Innovation Network Denmark on UK Arctic Science. This initiative supports UK Arctic scientists in their collaborative efforts with Arctic partners. The rapidly changing Arctic environment has both local and global impacts, making it crucial for our scientific understanding and strategic interests. 🌐 The UK Arctic Science community is among the strongest globally, contributing significantly to the understanding of environmental tipping points and Arctic governance. Our capabilities span various thematic areas, including artificial intelligence for monitoring ice coverage, the impact of receding permafrost on the built environment, and the health impact of Arctic pollutants. 🌐 Through our Science and Innovation Network (SIN), we support several Arctic science projects, including UK-Greenland and UK-Iceland Arctic Science Bursaries, delivered in collaboration with the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council Arctic Office and partners across the Arctic. This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation in advancing science and technology to address global challenges. ⏺️ Find out more about this SIN Denmark impact story: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ex-C65Kb ⏺️ Visit our collection of UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) impact stories to learn more about their work in other regions: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eg5GWJ-U #Arctic #UK #Science #Innovation #ScienceDiplomacy #Greenland #Iceland #Climate #Environment British Embassy Copenhagen | Bryony Mathew | British Antarctic Survey !
