Aptima, Inc., announced today the award of a $3.2 million contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to mature NAUTICAL, an AI solution that revolutionizes instructional systems design (ISD) tasks and workflows to accelerate training analysis. NAUTICAL, the Novel AI Utility for Training, Instruction and Comprehensive Analytic Learning, is a web-based tool that leverages large language models and generative AI to streamline and automate much of the labor-intensive, time-consuming processes required of Instructional System Designers and Developers to perform the critical training analysis to ensure Sailors receive the right training at the right time in the right place. Aptima was awarded the contract after earning the top score in a “Ready Relevant Learning Challenge,” a call to industry from NAWCTSD and Central Florida Tech Grove for AI solutions that could produce quality task analysis, learning analysis, and media selection in reduced time. The U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is exploring whether OpenAI’s technology can improve battle planning – although only in the context of a military video game - but experts caution that such AI should not be used in high-stakes situations The US military has already explored using AI technologies to analyse battlefield images and even identify targets for airstrikes – but it only recently began testing large language models and other types of generative AI that empower commercial AI chatbots. We know that China and the PLA are training machine learning models to target American and Allied naval vessels. But, how well do these models work? What sorts of data are needed to make such capabilities useful? What do we do about them? In our newest paper, "Open-Source Assessments of AI Capabilities: The Proliferation of AI Analysis Tools, Replicating Competitor Models, and the Zhousidun Dataset," we explore a leaked Chinese dataset that attempts to target Aegis combat system components on American and Allied destroyers and frigates. We train a state-of-the-art, widely adopted machine learning model on this dataset and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses on simulated scenes of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Overall, we provide a new methodology for net assessment of adversary AI capabilities in the open source. With real numbers in hand, capability development can be guided precisely.
