As we wind down the current election cycle and set our sights on the 2026 primaries, it’s time to plan ahead! 🎉 With the holiday season approaching, let’s harness this opportunity to boost our candidate’s visibility and connect with the community. Reflecting on this past year, I am incredibly proud of one of my biggest accomplishments: helping a candidate who campaigned for just nine weeks secure an impressive 26% of the vote! 🌟 In a thick Republican arena, introducing an unknown name was no small feat, but we successfully won over the voters and made a significant impact. Now, let’s channel that momentum into the upcoming primaries and make the most of the holiday events to amplify our candidate’s message. Instead of watching Tuesday's presidential debate, I was in school. Well, technically, I was at Back to School Night for my younger son, who's in 5th grade this year. And while I was anxious, I resisted the urge to hide my phone under the desk (because I was already uncomfortable in the tiny chairs.... iykyk) and look up live debate analysis, and instead listened to the fifth grade teachers talk about things like social studies and American history. Which then brought me back to my own 5th grade year. That year, we learned about how primaries worked, and ran our own debates, and learned to passionately advocate for candidates. It was 1988, after all, and so both the Republicans and the Democrats had large fields full of candidates. We learned how to discuss and disagree and, despite having opposing viewpoints, find those areas of common ground where we *could* agree. We learned how to search for facts, and challenge assumptions, and make powerful cases for our candidates without dehumanizing anyone else, and without running on a platform of hate and fear. I'm not sure our kids are going to learn that same lesson, in 2024. But we've got a way to fix that. We can vote. We can canvass. We can, most importantly, talk - talk to our friends. Talk to our families. Find out what matters and talk about that. We may not always agree - in fact, we can disagree more than we agree and we can still see the humanity in each other. We don't need to resort to wild, baseless lies, fear mongering, and using dictators as exemplars. We are better than that. Let's do better for them, too. Let's do SOMETHING. Gratitude on Election Day: Appreciating Our Democratic Freedoms On this election day here in the UK, I find it fitting to take a moment to reflect on the incredible privilege we have to live in a democratic and free society. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle of our daily lives, focusing on what’s not perfect or what we need to change to make our lives better. However, today offers a valuable reminder of the importance of gratitude and appreciation for the rights and freedoms we often take for granted. In the rush to achieve our goals, dreams, and desires, we can sometimes overlook the fundamental freedoms that empower us to pursue these ambitions. The right to vote, to express our opinions, and to participate in shaping our society are not universal. Many around the world still fight for the rights we so easily exercise. Today, let’s take a moment to be grateful for: 1. The Freedom to Choose: Our ability to vote is a powerful reminder that we can shape our future. Each vote is a voice in the democratic process, and having this choice is a testament to living in a free society. 2. The Opportunity to Be Heard: Whether through the ballot box, social media, or public forums, our ability to express our opinions and advocate for change is a cornerstone of democracy. 3. The Power of Collective Action: In a democratic society, we have the power to come together, support one another, and drive positive change. Our combined voices and efforts can lead to meaningful progress. While it's essential to continue striving for personal and professional growth, we should also pause to appreciate the foundation of freedom that supports our journey. A sense of gratitude for what we already have can provide the perspective needed to navigate life’s challenges with a positive outlook. As you go about your day, remember the privilege we have to participate in our democracy and the many freedoms that come with it. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a conference that left me feeling inspired and reminded of how important it is to make our voices heard, especially when it comes to voting. Today, I voted in the presidential election, and it reinforced just how critical it is for us, especially as young people, to get out there and vote. It’s easy to feel like your vote doesn’t matter, or to think that choosing not to vote is somehow making a statement. But the reality is, when we don’t vote, we leave the decisions to others – and often, we end up with outcomes we didn’t want. Our vote shapes our future, and if we don’t take part in that process, we let others decide our direction. For those of you who are in college or recently graduated, I want to encourage you: your vote is just as important as anyone else’s – in fact, it might be the most important! Take the time to research, prepare yourself, and go into the polls with a clear understanding of the choices you’re making. Our generation has the power to shape the world we want to live in, but it starts with us taking action. Let’s not wait for change to happen – let’s be the change. The 2024 United States elections are scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. As we reflect on the January 6, 2021, violent attack by a mob of supporters of then-U.S. president Donald Trump, two months after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, it's clear that civic education is more important than ever. Founder of OjoOido.com, Joseph N. This election year, our Network is collectively pushing policies that will advance educational and economic opportunities for young people of color. Meet EdLoC member and CEO of Families in Action for Quality Education (FIA) Kimi Kean. Through their voter education and mobilization efforts, FIA is empowering parents and youth to engage in elections and drive change in their local education system. "Our power-building institutes are a key part of our strategy," explains Kimi. "We focus on developing leadership, connecting with personal power, and learning organizing skills. This empowers our community to deconstruct power dynamics in public education." She also emphasizes the importance of meaningful civic engagement for youth and how it nurtures lifetime voters, noting that 80% of those who start voting by age 20 continue to vote their entire lives. We're eager to support our Network with the practical tools and insights to make a meaningful impact like this during this pivotal election year.
