What if tomorrow, we declared it "Flexible Friday?" People would talk to anyone. You would temporarily forget a grievance or wrongdoing from that neighbor or coworker. You'd abandon that routine and try a new thing. Reach for a book you wouldn't normally read. Listen to a song not found on your playlists. Eat at a restaurant outside of your town. Plan to worship in a new place. Shake hands with someone who has a different yard sign than you. And then, poof. All that flexibility could reveal all kinds of things that were always possible, but hard to see. I don’t read restaurant reviews, but I DO read pieces where people write about their relationship to work. When this reviewer shared the story of why he’s stepping away from his column after 12 years, he writes about the impact of his work on his health, and how a 2-week break helped him see how entangled he’d become with his job. “…at some point in those two weeks, it occurred to me that I am not my job.” I hope for all of us is that it doesn’t take a medically-required break to help us see how easy it is to fall for the stories and myths about work, perhaps the most pervasive and troubling of which is: I am what I do. Time away from work can help. So can deepening our engagement in other activities we value, or even talking about the blurred lines with someone who can help.
