A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about how we’re at pivotal point in our healthcare system, filled with opportunities to innovate and transform. I’d like to continue offering this perspective as we think about the next few years of the Trump administration and its implications for healthcare. While healthcare was not a critical point of discussion in this election, we can all agree it's a bipartisan issue. As we move into a new administration, I’m challenging myself to identify the main areas of opportunities where we can build bipartisan support and push for meaningful change (e.g., data interoperability and transparency). As I dive deeper into this research , I welcome your thoughts and perspectives. Where do you see the greatest opportunities for bipartisan collaboration? I will compile your thoughts and my research and share back the findings. Without a doubt, it’s a challenging time to be a public health professional in this politically charged environment. Many of us entered this field because of a passion for advocacy and the desire to create equitable systems that support all. Today, our work may face more barriers than in the past, but that only strengthens our resolve to advocate for the communities and causes we believe in. As public health professionals, we must think critically about building a healthcare system that works for all, regardless of political affiliation or personal beliefs. I encourage you all to think about the moment that sparked your passion for public health- hold onto that feeling and let it drive you forward over the next few years and beyond. For me, my biggest priority is ensuring we continue actively listening to each other, approaching our work with more empathy and compassion.

Please share and send this to your Senators and House members in your state as just one example of why Trump's picks are so important tt a new better and greater America. Thank you. A Stakeholder's Perspective on RFK Jr.'s Appointment to HHS Public health in America is at a critical juncture, with chronic diseases on the rise and widespread mistrust in healthcare institutions. RFK Jr.’s appointment to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) offers an opportunity to address these systemic challenges by promoting transparency, innovation, and individual medical autonomy. As a proven advocate for reform, RFK Jr. brings a fresh perspective to entrenched bureaucratic systems, aiming to prioritize evidence-based practices and patient-centered policies that better align with the public’s needs. Critics of RFK Jr.’s appointment often dismiss his approach as unconventional. Yet, his commitment to questioning outdated public health strategies and fostering open dialogue is precisely what the current system needs. Transparency in healthcare decision-making is crucial for rebuilding public trust, empowering patients, and addressing long-standing inefficiencies in federal health agencies. RFK Jr.’s emphasis on involving diverse stakeholders and encouraging grassroots participation ensures that health policies reflect the voices of the people they serve. RFK Jr.’s leadership has the potential to transform America’s health infrastructure by challenging existing paradigms and restoring faith in public institutions. His focus on addressing chronic diseases, encouraging collaborative solutions, and empowering individuals through access to information marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and effective healthcare system. Supporting his vision means advocating for a healthcare future that prioritizes innovation, accountability, and the well-being of all Americans.

Every profession needs strategies for managing future challenges. For our last priority for healthcare reform ahead of tonight’s Budget, we’ve gazed into our crystal ball and have set out structural changes our workforce needs to make now, to be fully-equipped to provide the best care in the future. In addition, it has never been clearer that acting on climate change is the most critical and pressing public health intervention in human history. Watch as Abeshek Nadarajah APAM (APA’s early career representative) and Calum Neish (APA’s student representative) explain our final priority for healthcare reform.

Tomorrow’s General Election is unlikely to bring any major surprises and - unless the pollsters have really outdone themselves! - we’ll have the first Labour Government since 2010. Once celebrations 🎉 for Wes Streeting and his health team subside the new administration is going to be hit by a serious health hangover 🤒. Record waiting lists, financial pressures, workforce shortages, sustainability issues and the perennial question of the integration of health and social care will all be in the in-tray for the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Winter pressures, regrettably, are also coming. Clues for what comes next can be found in the Labour manifesto but expect a tonal shift from campaign mode to crisis management sooner rather than later. To consider what some of the solutions to these problems could entail, sign up for next week’s LaingBuisson webinar ‘Private Healthcare Post-Election: Navigating Changes’ to hear from CF’s chief executive Hannah Farrar, as her and Spire Healthcare Group plc's Justin Ash and Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN)’s David Hare MBE consider how private providers can adapt to the new reality and respond to the UK’s wider healthcare challenges. 📍Register for the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/gcU75_WW #GeneralElection #Healthcare #FutureofHealthcare

New publication on trust in health systems Our latest work, "Trust: The Foundation of Health Systems," is now available through the European Observatory's on Health Systems and Policies: https://lnkd.in/diWN5r6i We explore the vital role of trust within healthcare—from supporting patients in seeking care and following treatment to fostering public confidence in the health system's transparency and adaptability. Why does trust matter in health systems? Trust is at the heart of a well-functioning healthcare system, influencing interactions among patients, healthcare workers, policymakers, and communities. We highlight the modern challenges of building trust, particularly with new technologies, data privacy concerns, and the impact of misinformation. I’m grateful for this collective effort and to all contributors. We hope this work offers valuable insights for all those invested in creating resilient and inclusive health systems for the future.

Earlier this year, my daughter gifted me a book that showcased the front pages of the Washington Post on my birthday throughout my life. Reflecting on a headline from 1971, it serves as a reminder that the healthcare crisis, nearly 54 years later, remains a pressing issue. Recent discussions have sparked varied opinions, some veering towards extreme negativity. This headline underscores the intricate nature of the problem, highlighting its longstanding presence in legislative and reform efforts. Within this complex landscape, challenges like fraud, waste, and abuse, alongside financial gains in a profit-driven system, demand attention. Amidst these issues, there exist dedicated individuals within the healthcare ecosystem – from providers to payors and intermediaries – who strive daily to enhance accessibility and affordability. It is crucial to acknowledge the multifaceted nature of this challenge, the extensive history of efforts to address it, and the collective endeavors towards improvement. The journey towards a more effective healthcare system is marked by both obstacles and unwavering commitment from those seeking positive change.
