Happy National Woman Road Warrior Day from O'Hara's Son Roofing Company (OSR)! We caught up with Kiana Rodriguez, one of our standout travel superintendents, to explore her experiences as a trailblazing road warrior. Tell us a bit about yourself. In 2020, I high-tailed it from Connecticut to Florida, ditching my snow shovel for a fishing rod and my sanity for beachside barbecues. Now, I’m all about beachy vibes and boat life. What led you to a career in roofing? After being laid off as an overhead crane operator, I asked my brother to help me get into his company. He doubted my ability, but I proved him wrong and earned his praise as a powerful woman in the role. I developed a passion for the trade, and although I faced discouragement, I persevered and achieved my goals. What advice would you give to other women considering commercial roofing? Don’t give up. It will get hard; your feelings will get hurt, but the rewards of reaching your goals and earning respect are worth it. People may doubt your abilities, but prove them wrong every single time. Work hard and learn everything you can to become the best, even if others don’t want you to be. Have you had any mentors or role models who helped guide you? Absolutely! I owe my learning to my amazing mentors and my dedication. My first mentor, Daniel Secondino, owner of Premier Building Associates, saw my potential and guided me. Any questions I had while being a foreman were always answered, allowing me to improve. I am deeply grateful to all my mentors! What’s your approach to ensuring safety standards on every project? I start each day by being the first on-site before my subs arrive, giving me about 30 minutes for a safety inspection. When the team arrives, all equipment is inspected, and I take a picture of the crew to ensure they are dressed appropriately. I also monitor for unsafe conditions and voice my concerns. I want everyone to go home safely. What’s one thing you always pack for your travels? I always pack my mini cooler with snacks and drinks for the ride.
