Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), once Lithuania’s largest generator of electricity, announced today that the first step towards dismantling of the reactor technological equipment has now been completed. A dismantling strategy has been established for the extremely complex task of taking apart the steam-drum separators, which will require the careful removal and disposal of about 6,000 tonnes of radiation-contaminated metal. The work is being carried out by Westinghouse Electric Company, while Amentum is providing consultancy support for INPP’s Project Management Unit and carrying out the duties of FIDIC Engineer for the dismantling contract. It’s all part of INPP’s mission to create a clean environment through the sustainable management of the nuclear legacy. #atominekomanda #iae #WeAreAmentum #NuclearDecommissioning

KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.05.06. KHNP signed Contract for Romanian NPP Infrastructure Engineering Services - Early commencement of Infrastructure Engineering for Cernavoda NPP Unit1 Refurbishment Project Execution - Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (President & CEO Joo-ho Whang, hereinafter referred to as KHNP) signed an infrastructure engineering services contract for the retubing and refurbishment project of Cernavoda Unit 1 nuclear power plant in Romania with Candu Energy Inc. (Candu), an Atkins Réalis company [SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.] (TSX: ATRL), in Canada, on 3rd of May. The Cernavoda Unit 1 retubing and refurbishment project involves replacement of key components, such as pressure tubes (equipment corresponding to the reactor vessel of a light water reactor), and construction of infrastructure for additional 30 years of operation. KHNP made a tripartite Consortium Agreement with Candu Energy Inc. and Ansaldo Nucleare S.p.A. (Ansaldo) in October last year, and has been in discussion with the project owner SNN for signing the EPC contract. This services contract is engaged with early commencement of engineering works for infrastructure construction (reinforcement of site foundations, security facilities and various auxiliary buildings), which is a part of scope of works in the Cernavoda Unit 1 refurbishment project, in advance of the EPC contract for Cernavoda NPP Unit1 project execution. With the aim of the EPC contract conclusion within this year, SNN views that this contract will mitigate the project's process risks and also play a pivotal role in centering around the EPC contract. "Through this contract, we look forward to more strengthened cooperation between the two countries in the field of nuclear energy," said CEO Whang, adding that "we will exert our best efforts to sign the EPC contract within this year.” #KHNP #Romanian #NPP #NPPInfrastructureEngineeringServices #Cernavoda #nuclear #nuclearpower #CanduEnergy #CernavodaNPPUnit1 #SNN

UAE’s ADNOC to finalise second HVDC submarine deal with South Korea’s KEPCO The UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC Group) is expected to finalise a submarine power grid agreement with South Korea’s leading utility provider, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), by late September 2024. The deal is aimed at facilitating the transmission of power from the 1.4 GW Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant (BNEP) to ADNOC’s offshore oil fields over 100 km away, using high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. KEPCO is responsible for the design, construction and operation of BNEP’s four reactors, the last of which was connected to the grid in March 2024. Driven by the surge in energy demand for isolated and offshore operations, the market is bolstered by technological innovations in small modular reactors (SMRs) that enhance safety and scalability. New entrants face challenges such as regulatory regimes from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), high upfront costs, and public perception of nuclear safety. Continued innovation and supportive policies focused on energy security and environmental sustainability are expected to propel market growth. Floating Nuclear Power Plant EPC involves designing, constructing, and installing nuclear reactors on floating platforms, offering advantages like mobility, easier deployment, and initial cost savings compared to traditional land-based plants. Floating Nuclear Power Plant EPCs' strategic benefits include deployment flexibility in areas unsuitable for traditional nuclear plants, benefiting isolated islands, naval military bases, and offshore oil rigs, particularly in the Northern coast region of the Russian Federation and countries like Norway. Major companies in this niche but rapidly developing sector possess expertise in nuclear engineering, marine barge construction, and offshore infrastructure, addressing regulatory approvals, safety issues, and environmental impact assessments. Projects are advancing in the Northern hemisphere and the ASEAN region.
