So much great kōrero at last week's event about making accessibility a reality within the media, news & communications context. Key takeaways that I heard were: - Practical things matter - removal of accessibility barriers (note there's still some funding available for this through MSD so don’t be shy in applying for this to fund accessibility supports for your projects) - In accessibility conversations, aim to keep the focus & priority on the needs of disabled people - If you’re non-disabled and want to help remove barriers, it really helps to be OK with being called out by disabled people & learning fast! Before you hopefully log off, I am sending a brief note to encourage you if you can spare a few minutes to submit pitches for Investigative Reporters and Editors upcoming annual conference that's virtual by design, AccessFest, October 17-19. Topic ideas and speaker suggestions are great and pitches don't need to be fully baked. We hope to show that there remains demand for virtual training. In case you’re not familiar, AccessFest focuses on two major prongs that expands IRE’s efforts to provide more accessible training. Some sessions are centered on belonging, equity, and inclusion in the newsroom and through better news coverage of inequities in the communities journalists serve. We are pleased to announce that Public Media Company has been awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation in support of a new initiative to help local public media organizations expand access to local news, particularly in underserved communities. This initiative will provide local public media organizations and community stakeholders with greater insights into their local news ecosystems, as well as support for launching, growing, and scaling their local news services. This initiative builds on those assets and will help these organizations expand and grow their service at this critical time. Sometimes "community-centered" strategies aren't always responsive to evolving community needs. When something works in your community-academic research partnership and you continue with that framework for years without iterating, your so-called "community-centered" strategies may prevent you from conducting authentic research. When you incorporate feedback loops and prioritize reciprocity in the structural development of your community-academic research partnerships, then you can account for those evolving shifts and iterate when needed.
