October is #GlobalDiversityAwarenessMonth, and here are some ways your credit union can celebrate it: - Throw an employee lunch, and encourage employees to bring in a dish that represents their heritage or culture. - Invite diverse guest speakers to share information about their culture. - Support a local charity that provides services to a diverse group of people. - Host a diversity training session - Do a deep dive of your hiring, retaining and promotion practices to ensure that you're being inclusive. Over the past few years there has been growing recognition for the need to protect the planet and resources, and to try and minimise the impact of activities on the environment. To that end, we have seen more written about doing business the right way and in many cases, family businesses lead the way in this regard, taking the long-term view, being firmly embedded in the communities in which they operate and acting as stewards for future generations. We asked our Global Family Business Think Tank Panel if they thought that family firms feel that it is important to do 'business right' and make decisions that align with this principle more than their non-family counterparts. At the start of 2024, we were awarded B Corp certification and after an assessment of 5 key areas of the business, we got an overall score of 95.1 (you need 80 to achieve B Corp status). As a business, we don’t toot our own horn anywhere near enough, but now we’re going to. We scored highly for: Governance: Our mission, our impact, our ethics, and transparency. Workers: How much we look after the health, safety, and wellness of our people, help them develop, and create an engaging place to work. Community: How we engage in the community we operate in, in the wonderful north east. This includes things like charitable activities and creating local employment. Environment: The things we do as a business to help protect the environment, such as beach clean ups and reducing our carbon footprint with hybrid working. Customers: We provide quality services which are designed to create a specific positive outcome for people who use our service. Through the Corporate Coalition’s Corporate Connector, Oak Park Family Transitional Center and AUSTIN AFRICAN AMERICAN BUSINESS NETWORK ASSOCIATION (AAABNA) was matched with EY, a global consulting company eager to leverage its resources and expertise to support the nonprofit’s mission. "Our board of directors were really thirsty for information,” said Malcolm Crawford, Executive Director at AAABNA. “Before, I didn’t have a way to communicate our successes. Lately a number of my clients have asked for advice on how to respond to or prepare for "cultural wars" style issues. For anyone wondering about this too I highly recommend Celia Richardson's excellent piece in The Guardian about the National Trust's approach. "So how does an institution deal with all this? We’ve had to be open and direct about what’s behind untrue stories wherever possible. We’ve answered all media questions, and consistently sought corrections. We’ve been careful not to use major platforms for countering disinformation – no one travels to our Instagram to see rebuttals of culture-war stories. We’ve spoken to other institutions and charities about what’s happening. We don’t want this to be our job, but sometimes it is. Most importantly, we have listened.
