June 5 marks World Environment Day, and this year we celebrate by recognizing the groundbreaking work of Ensense, one of our recent incubation cohort successes. Ensense exemplifies RevHub's entrepreneurial ecosystem fostering impactful solutions that tackle climate change and shape a sustainable future. Led by Shahram Farhadi, Ensense leverages cutting-edge AI and data science to transform how cities manage public spaces. Their platform acts as a sophisticated sensory system, collecting data from strategically placed sensors and cameras which empowers city planners and policymakers to make informed decisions. For example, Ensense can pinpoint areas with high air pollution and give this information to stakeholders. This data informs targeted interventions like traffic flow optimization or green infrastructure projects. These results can improve air quality and combat climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, Ensense recognizes that data alone is not enough to create true, effective change, so they work closely with local communities to ensure their solutions are culturally sensitive and address specific needs. This fosters a sense of ownership among residents and builds long-term commitment to sustainable practices within communities. Investing in companies like Ensense is crucial for building a greener future. 🌍 The “AI for Climate Summit” was held on November 4 at the Istanbul Modern Museum. The summit was organized in collaboration with the Turkish Informatics Foundation’s Be Node initiative and the Vector Institute, founded by #GeoffreyHinton, recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. In this powerful gathering, AI experts and climate advocates explored AI’s role in advancing impactful #climatesolutions. From redefining AI frameworks to addressing the environmental footprint of AI itself, the summit emphasized an urgent need for regenerative and sustainable approaches. Here are a few key takeaways from Ray Boyle, who did an amazing job facilitating the workshop between AI researchers and our partner climate NGOs. 1️⃣ The need for shifting from outdated frameworks to "horizon thinking" for climate action. 2️⃣ AI's dual role: "#GreenbyAI" and "#GreeninAI". 3️⃣ Transforming flawed systems for planetary health and well-being. AI should support this systemic regeneration, not just optimize for efficiency and profit. 4️⃣ Embracing collaboration and innovative governance for regenerative change. In June 2024, the World Economic Forum published its Flagship Report on the "Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2024." 🌍✨ Here is the list of groundbreaking innovations that are set to shape the future: 1️⃣ AI for Scientific Discovery 2️⃣ Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) 3️⃣ Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces 4️⃣ High Altitude Platform Stations 5️⃣ Integrated Sensing and Communication 6️⃣ Immersive Technology for the Built World 7️⃣ Elastocalorics 8️⃣ Carbon-Capturing Microbes 9️⃣ Alternative Livestock Feeds 🔟 Genomics for Transplants I am particularly happy to be working in the second-best industry—Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs). It’s crucial that the World Economic Forum recognizes the global importance of digital identity-based solutions. 🌐 What I found particularly interesting in the report is the analysis of the regions investing the most into PETs, along with governments actively supporting research and development through grants. While Estonia, the digital nation, did not make it into the top 5 for investments or national grants, our neighbors in Finland have succeeded in securing a top 5 spot in national grants. Congratulations to them! 🇫🇮🎉 This should be a wake-up call for Estonia. We must take a moment to look in the mirror and reflect on how we can elevate our commitment to innovation and digital excellence. 🇪🇪💡 #EmergingTech #AI #Innovation #PrivacyTech #DigitalIdentity #Sustainability #FutureTech #Genomics #ClimateAction #WEF2024 #TechForGood #DigitalNation #Estonia #Finland #matterID

Exactly one week ago, I had the chance to speak at Salon SIMI, thanks to an invitation from Urban AI! I had the opportunity to showcase the benefits of using AI to adapt our cities to climate change - the first results of our research with Cornell Tech - and contribute to a panel focused on the ecological transition, alongside other great speakers such as Fouzi Benkhelifa and François Panouillé. Some reflections I’ve taken away: 🔹 Beyond decarbonization – While reducing emissions is essential, the need to adapt to a changing climate is a priority. Then we can ensure we remain within #planetary #boundaries. 🔹 AI is a means, not the end – Technology alone is not the goal; it is a powerful tool to support and accelerate the transition. 🔹 #Collaboration is key – The scale of adaptation efforts requires cooperation between all of us: policymakers, businesses, researchers, and urban communities. A big thank you to SuReal and to Urban AI for giving me the chance to showcase our research and vision. Stay tuned : more to come at https://lnkd.in/eYr47cQv. #AI #ClimateAdaptation #EcologicalTransition #Collaboration #UrbanInnovation #SIMI2024
