The Reality of Being an International Graduate in the UK Over the past months, I’ve applied to over 3,600 jobs. I’ve poured my heart and soul into preparing for interviews, building an extensive portfolio, and acquiring certifications— all while balancing hope and resilience. Yet, no matter how well an interview goes, no matter how much of a perfect fit I may be for the role, there’s one question that derails it all: "Are you on a visa?" When I explain that I am on a Graduate/PSW visa, which allows me to work in the UK for two years, I often receive blank stares or outright dismissive reactions. Many recruiters and employers don’t understand the visa or the opportunities it offers, and despite my best efforts to explain, the conversation shifts. What started as a great interview, filled with enthusiasm and mutual interest, turns into polite rejection emails citing the need for someone with "permanent residency." It’s disheartening. It’s not just about me—this speaks to a larger issue in how talented, hard-working international graduates are overlooked. We’ve invested in studying here, adapting to new cultures, and excelling in our fields. Many of us bring unique perspectives, creativity, and skills that are exactly what industries like PR—known for its need for out-of-the-box thinkers—thrive on. I’ve worked tirelessly, not just to meet expectations but to exceed them. I’ve earned my degree, built a portfolio, obtained extra certifications, and shown time and again that I have what it takes to contribute meaningfully. Yet, it feels like none of that matters when the visa question arises. What frustrates me most is the untapped potential. International graduates like me are ready to give so much to industries that could benefit immensely from diverse voices and fresh ideas. We deserve a chance to prove ourselves—not to be dismissed because of a technicality. To fellow international graduates feeling the same pain, I see you. To employers reading this, I urge you to look beyond the visa status. Look at the dedication, talent, and passion that candidates bring to the table. You might just find someone who transforms your team for the better. The journey is tough, but I won’t let it break me. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that rejection doesn’t define you—your persistence does. Here’s to all of us who refuse to give up, who keep going despite the odds. Your hard work matters, your skills matter, you matter. Let’s keep pushing for the opportunities we deserve. #InternationalGraduates #JobSearchJourney #VisaChallenges #GraduateVisa #PSWVisa #UKJobs #Resilience #DiversityAndInclusion #TalentOverVisa #FutureOfWork #PRIndustry #CreativeThinking #NeverGiveUp #OpportunitiesMatter #WorkplaceDiversity #PR

“How do I download your brain and land a visa-sponsored job at KPMG UK like you?" Last Sunday, a Chinese international student, whom I met in person, asked me this question. I replied "Well you technically can, by reading my LinkedIn posts" To which he said "But it's not the same, it's so much better to learn from you in person". This got me thinking... The majority of my students who landed their visa-sponsored UK jobs learnt from me by interacting with me on live calls... Through the explosive growth of the International Hustlers Academy, we've proven that students LOVE access to me in daily Zoom calls, where I answer questions specific to their case. Since I understand not everyone can afford the Academy, I'm hosting a FREE webinar at 10 am this Thursday. The webinar is called “Visa Sponsorship Job Accelerator”. I won't hold back in terms of value and will summarise EVERYTHING I have learnt helping 30+ students land visa-sponsored UK jobs. I’ll cover the 3 KEY pillars needed to land a visa-sponsored UK job, (which will eventually lead to PR) in the UK. These pillars are: 1️⃣ Research 2️⃣ Apply 3️⃣ Negotiate VISA-sponsorship If you’d like to attend the webinar and download my brain, just like Zack did (who landed his dream VISA-sponsored UK job)… Comment “invite” and I’ll send you an invite - there are only 100 spots and this post will likely be seen by 50,000+ people so comment ASAP to secure a spot 🚀 ------------------------------------------------------ PS. If you're still on the fence about joining the Academy, we're now ALSO writing ATS-friendly CVs only for those who join in May. DM me "Academy" and I'll send you the next steps to apply (Only 70 spots left which will be gone by Thursday). PPS. The picture below is my transformation from a shy international student who struggled to make eye contact, to helping 100s of international students land their dream jobs in just 8 years...

“I’ve got 10 months left on my Visa. How do I land a visa-sponsored job?” Here are 5 easy steps I teach my students: 1️⃣ Find your sweet spot → Your sweet spot is usually a role in an industry you have worked in before → Check the comments below for video training on how to find your sweet spot 2️⃣ Message international student alumni from your university → Make sure the alumni are in jobs in your field → I recommend messaging 20 alumni DAILY (or at least 100 per week). Ask them how they landed these jobs 3️⃣ Make 1 high-quality job application per day → From helping 100s of international students, I’ve seen my best students such as Ishita, Evana and Zackary make only 1 job application per day → Check the comments below for a checklist for a high-quality application 4️⃣ Follow up for EACH job application → The key here is to follow up via email (not LinkedIn message) once every 5 days → Check the comments below for follow-up email templates which you can copy and paste 5️⃣ Follow an interview prep strategy → My best students would always prepare answers to these questions: 1) Tell me about yourself; 2) Why this role? and 3) Why this company? → Check the comments below for an interview prep document (with sample answers) Once you consistently follow EACH of the 5 steps above (at least 6 days per week) for 6 months, you will 100% land a visa-sponsored job! Is finding my way in the UK a political issue? Or just bad governance? Here are some of my thoughts about my experience so far :) In 2023, I was finally able to pursue a passion of mine in a country I thought would open up a lot of doors for me. With the grace of God, support of my family and friends and a lot of hard work, I was able to complete an MA in Creative Writing and Publishing Fiction. Great, right? Not so much. Since 2017, I've been working in social media marketing. I've worked within the scope of a multinational, I've worked with several non-governmental organizations and I've worked with commercial clients in F&B and F&A. So why is it that when I try to combine my eight years of experience with my current degree, all I see are rejections? I've been applying to (in the UK): - entry level social media jobs - mid level social media jobs - social media manager jobs - copywriting jobs - publishing internships - publishing work placements - entry level publishing jobs And still, everywhere I try, I'm rejected. On the other hand, I'm approached by several companies in the GCC about my profile matching their needs. I reject again and again and again because I want to combine my interest and experience in social media with my passion for writing. I naively thought that, if I have to work in social media while I'm able to find my footing in publishing, then so be it. But it seems that my eight years of experiences mean nothing, even to the employers who say 'no experience required,' in the UK. And I won't lie, I've considered the reason behind this a lot. The only reasons I've found are: - I'm Arab - I'm on a Graduate Visa Which brings on even bigger questions. What does my Arabness have to do with anything? I graduated from the UK with an MA. I meet all of the requirements and am even overqualified for some of the jobs I've tried applying to. And for the ones I don't, they could consider me a fresh grad trying to climb up in a new industry. Another big question: if employers can't hire employees on graduate visas, then what's the point of a graduate visa to begin with? Why do we - international students - have to pay kidneys and eyes for a visa that employers still see as a red flag? I have a great educational background. I've gained invaluable skills and knowledge during my time working with different entities and people. I've grown my professional circle. I'm proud of where I've come. But going through all of this in the UK has been very demotivating, has brought up a lot of questions on whether or not I've taken the right decisions about my career and has left me in front of a wall. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading. Any leads or tips on how I can break into a new field in the UK (publishing), or how I can resume my current career until I'm able to set myself up in publishing would be great. I welcome projects, connections, pages, contacts, thoughts.. Anything and anyone.
