The Most Inspiring Tech Leaders I Know Right Now? They Aren’t on Forbes, They’re in College. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my conversations with college tech interns, it’s that the future of innovation is brighter than ever. I mean, who else would create a completely new tech tool just because they wanted to make their morning routine 12% more efficient? These students are really out here using technology not just to build their careers, but to enhance every little part of their lives—from getting through their classes faster to helping their friends find the best food on campus. Honestly, it’s inspiring to see how seamlessly they blend technology with their own lives, all in ways that feel genuine and meaningful. Talking to them is a breath of fresh air. Every time I interview a new intern, I’m not just getting to know their skills and projects; I’m seeing their passion, their heartfulness, and this authentic drive to make life better for themselves and those around them. As someone from the music industry (where passion runs deep and loud!), I can tell you, tech interns bring a different kind of rhythm that’s equally as inspiring. We spend so much time watching industry giants—the Elon Musks, the CTOs at big-name companies—but I’ll let you in on a little secret: the real magic is in the up-and-comers, the ones still building projects in their dorm rooms, finding workarounds to enhance their lives and solve everyday problems for those around them. They may not have titles like “Chief Technology Officer” yet, but the ingenuity, creativity, and sheer grit they’re putting into their work is something that we all should be watching. The next generation of tech leaders may not have a decade of experience (yet), but their impact is undeniable. So, while the world waits to see what the industry veterans will do next, I’ll be keeping an eye on these innovators who are quietly (and sometimes not-so-quietly) redefining what it means to make a difference with technology. ✨ An Introduction Series: FixedByte TechWoman- What we are doing ✨ Our focus for 2024 is to build a strategic community through social impact projects, skills development, partnerships, and sustainable practices. Here's what to expect: 1. Social impact projects: Each project was carefully crafted with three key criteria in mind: sustainability, innovation, and social impact. Our ultimate goal is to create a harmonious community where women leaders drive projects that tackle the unique challenges faced by women in their respective communities. We believe in building projects that are impactful and also self-sustaining. As a result, each project is designed to operate independently, allowing it to continue making meaningful contributions to the community long after its initial launch. Our first project will be launched in June 2024 and led by Kate Ewurama Markin, Emmanuella Adamah and Sandra Eyram Aku Wagba. 2. Skills development: We are expanding our community with our 3rd cohort, offering opportunities for women to break into tech without prior experience. We're also working on scholarship offers to provide even more opportunities for our members. 3. Partnership: We don't need to reinvent the wheel. There are organizations and industry experts who are already championing areas that align with our mission. We have recently formed a partnership with FestMan Learning Hub to help us contribute to quality education and encourage women to pursue careers in tech. We are eagerly anticipating opportunities to collaborate with higher education institutions, non-profit organizations, and industries. 4. Sustainable practices: Our goal is to create a self-sustaining community, and we have implemented this by carefully selecting trainees to take on leadership roles such as team leads. This ensures that even in the absence of a supervisor or instructor, operations can still run smoothly. After doing careful calculation of my degree audit, it looks like I might not graduate at the June 2026 goal that I set for myself 😔. But that's ok! Being a career transitioner, the one thing I wanted most is to finish school and just jump into getting more relevant experience in the tech industry. I just felt so behind and so "late." However, these last couple of months taught me that it is absolutely fine to take my time! My time in university is an avenue to explore different paths into tech, meet awesome mentors, and "grow" into the tech community. Being at Western Governors University has given me so many opportunities to hone my skills and passion for tech while still being in school. WGU's Women in Tech club led me to Conectado Inc, arguably the most impactful bootcamp I've come across, where I gained foundational knowledge of AI and exposure to some of the most inspiring, uplifting people (shoutout to Diana Pacheco, PhD and Jesus Castillo, my mentor). I've also gained exposure to awesome groups like Rewriting the Code and WITI , and even experienced my first ever DevFest at NYC! So, now what? I'm graduating just a little later, with a goal date of December 2026. But instead of seeing each course as another obstacle to my dream, I see them now as talking points for connection or side quests to better orient my talent. To all the career transitioners out there who feel behind their (oftentimes) younger peers: let it all marinate! There is a time and a place for you to be. And though it might not feel like it at first, I guarantee you, you are right on time.
