The U.S. Department of Labor has finalized a rule on proper fit requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) in the construction industry. This rule emphasizes the importance of properly fitting PPE to enhance worker protection from hazardous conditions. By aligning the construction industry with general industry standards, organizations will need to address long-standing safety concerns related to improperly sized PPE. OSHA’s final rule on fit requirements for personal protective equipment in construction is undergoing a final review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. The rule, sent to OIRA on Nov. 13, would align 1926.95 with PPE fit requirements in OSHA’s general industry and maritime standards. For example, 1910.132(d)(1)(iii) requires employers to “select PPE that properly fits each affected employee.” Currently, 1926.95(c) requires PPE only to “be of safe design and construction for the work to be performed.” OSHA published a proposed rule on the requirements in July 2023 and says the “failure of standard-sized PPE to protect physically smaller construction workers properly, as well as problems with access to properly fitting PPE, have long been safety and health concerns in the construction industry, especially for some women.” The agency expects that the change won’t “increase employers’ costs or compliance burdens.” https://lnkd.in/e2VX523M

Ladder Safety Non-self-supporting ladders, which must lean against a wall or other support, are to be positioned at such an angle that the horizontal distance from the top support to the foot of the ladder is about 1⁄4 the working length of the ladder. In the case of job-made wooden ladders, that angle should equal about 1⁄8 the working length. This minimizes the strain of the load on ladder joints that may not be as strong as on commercially manufactured ladders. Ref: OSHA

Safety First on Construction Sites! 🦺 In the construction sector, safety is paramount. Every day, workers face potential hazards, so it's crucial to stay vigilant and adhere to safety standards. Here are some essential tips to keep everyone safe on site: 1. **Wear Proper PPE**: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is your first line of defence. Helmets, gloves, high-visibility vests, and steel-toed boots are non-negotiable. Make sure your gear is in good condition and fits properly. 2. **Regular Training**: Continuous education is key. Regular safety training sessions ensure that everyone is up-to-date with the latest safety protocols and knows how to handle emergencies. Knowledge is power, and in this case, it can save lives. 3. **Site Inspections**: Conduct regular site inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards. Ensure that all machinery is well-maintained and that safety barriers are in place. A proactive approach can prevent accidents before they happen. Let's make safety a priority! Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is extremely important on construction sites for the following reasons: 1. Safety: PPE helps protect workers from injuries and accidents by providing a barrier between them and potential hazards such as falling objects, electrical shocks, and sharp objects. 2. Health: PPE can prevent exposure to harmful substances such as chemicals, dust, and fumes, reducing the risk of long-term health issues such as respiratory problems and skin irritation. 3. Legal requirements: Many countries have strict regulations that mandate the use of PPE on construction sites to ensure the safety and well-being of workers. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines and legal consequences for employers. 4. Productivity: By providing workers with the necessary PPE, employers can ensure that their employees are able to work safely and efficiently without the risk of injury or illness. 5. Reputation: Construction companies that prioritize safety and provide proper PPE for their workers are more likely to attract and retain skilled employees, as well as maintain a positive reputation within the industry. #construction #healthandsafety #ppe #tunnelling #mining #civilengineering #constructionjobs #constructionwork #safety #employeesfirst #engineering #constructionproject
