It fosters cooperation, avoids adversarial dynamics, and serves as a valuable resource for discussing concerns, assessing risks, and nurturing safety leaders. Tips for Establishing a Successful Safety Committee: ☑️ 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿. Outline the purpose, ground rules, expectations, time commitments, voting procedures, and activities. ☑️ 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. Collaboratively define objectives and goals for a specific time frame, such as a year. Examples of such goals include implementing new ergonomics training, reviewing high-hazard incidents or close calls, and providing hazard identification training. ☑️ 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁. Involve respected frontline employees to amplify influence. ☑️ 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. Gain leadership backing to navigate operational priorities and assist with investigations or training. ☑️ 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁. Implement strategies to effectively resolve disputes. ☑️ 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. Provide training, mentorship, and ownership to committee members. ☑️ 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲. Track and showcase performance metrics like audits, hazard corrections, training completions, incident rates, and resource allocation. Once you form the committee, establish the meeting schedule, and stick to it. Avoid allowing other priorities to derail the committee’s work. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 When a company is busy, employees might be tempted to prioritize production demands over safety. They might take shortcuts or bypass established processes. This can have serious consequences. Safety must be a core value and processes should be consistently followed to help protect the well-being of employees and help prevent safety failures and injuries. When processes are ignored, organizations can experience needless safety failures. Compromising safety for the sake of short-term production demands can damage a company’s reputation and erode trust between the company and its employees, customers, and other stakeholders. Contact our team to have an Acrisure risk advisor help you determine the proper steps to creating a healthy culture that can avoid unnecessary risk and improve performance. #SafetyCulture #SafetyRules #RiskManagement #Productivity

𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲: Director of Risk Resources, Great Lakes + Healthcare Center of Excellence, National 🏢 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 27 years in the risk management & insurance industries 📆 Expertise: Specialist in risk analytics and benchmarking 📊, OSHA compliance, workers’ compensation, and violence in the healthcare industry 🏥 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: MBA 🎓, Managing General Agent (MGA), Property and Casualty (P&C) Agent 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁: I’ve never had my own bedroom! I grew up sharing a bedroom and bunkbed with my brother, who is 16 months older than me. I went on to college where I had a roommate, and then I got married. I am a dedicated youth football and track coach 🏈🏃♂️ and created a free, winter speed camp for community kids and a summer track and field camp for second through seventh graders. I also played division one football as a quarterback at Bucknell University. I’m a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan 🏟️ and played a game in Three Rivers Stadium. I’m still the QB records holder for Hopewell High School, also attended by Tony Dorsett, co-member of the Hopewell Sports Hall of Fame, Track & Football. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗱: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿? I grew up in a union household in Pennsylvania, and I learned the power of teamwork and unity early on while playing football. I realized that I had a talent for bringing people together, managing chaos, driving for results, and leaning on my math skills to get through life. My background growing up in a steel town (Aliquippa, PA) enables me to bridge the gap between frontline employees and CEOs, fostering collaboration and driving solutions to complex challenges, like those I’m tackling with OSHA Violence in Healthcare and Social Service programs across the country and across the continuum of healthcare. When the steel mill in Aliquippa would not comply with the National Labor Relations Act, 10 men for Aliquippa went to the Supreme Court, and won. We were taught as kids to fight and keep our integrity. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? Be transparent and talk with me about your pain points – what keeps you up at night. "𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱.” — Jason Russell, Founder + President, Secure Environment Consultants Our recent De-Riskathon featured a powerful presentation by Jason Russell: “Defusing Tension: Mastering the Art of De-Escalation.” Jason shared that one of the most powerful things we can do in any conversation is to truly listen. Employees are more likely to engage when they know that they are heard. Conflicts are more likely to arise when peoples’ voices are ignored. Jason recommended we speak a small percentage of the time, and let the other person take up the rest of the time. Insights can emerge when you give others the space to share their thoughts fully, without interruption allowing them to feel heard and understood. Do you have listening tips to share? #Communication #Leadership #ActiveListening
