Excitement is growing for Sunday’s #oscars2024 ceremony, but do awards really matter to streamers? Clearly, there is considerable soft marketing power deriving from the glamour and kudos of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, BAFTAs, and the like, but what about the hard numbers? This fascinating data from Digital i clearly shows the bump in last year's Netflix viewing of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' as it rode the rising wave of awards season hype culminating in its 2023 BAFTA Best Film win and 9 Academy Award nominations followed by the relative disappointment of winning Best International Picture rather than the top prize of Best Picture. Investing in the German-language wartime epic ahead of production translated into a clear extended viewership of that movie for Netflix, but also generated a hugely valuable ‘halo’ dynamic for the streamer - not least amongst industry insiders, reinforcing the idea that #netflix can be a home for the world’s most creative talent. This year Netflix has Bradley Cooper’s 'Maestro' in the mix for Best Picture, whilst Apple is hoping that Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon can upset favourite 'Oppenheimer', which has itself just debuted on Peacock. #streamingwars#movies#oscars

One of the most fascinating documentaries in recent years. A single circus act, filmed over the lifetimes of Angela and Vanya, is a testament to this tectonic shift.
