Set up third-party tracking for your ad campaigns

Third-party tracking allows you to measure advertising performance by adding your tag to your LinkedIn Ads. We currently support Google Marketing Platform (formerly Google DoubleClick), DoubleVerify, and Integral Ad Science (IAS) as third-party tracking partners.

Google Marketing Platform (formerly Google DoubleClick) - By adding Google Marketing Platform tracking tags, you can attribute the clicks and impressions for each of your LinkedIn Ads. We support the following ad formats: 

  • Text ads 
  • Dynamic ads 
  • Sponsored Content ads

Important to know

Third-party tracking isn’t available for thought leader ads.

DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science (IAS) - Use DoubleVerify or IAS to measure viewability and invalid traffic (IVT) metrics for your LinkedIn video ads.

Before you set up tracking

Before you add your tracking tags to your LinkedIn Ads, you’ll need to obtain the tag URLs from your third-party tracking partner. Keep in mind: 

  • The accepted format is tracking tags. We recommend using tracking tags instead of a Google click tracking URL as your ad’s landing page.  
  • For impressions and clicks, we only accept impression and click tracking tags. Monitoring or blocking tags aren’t accepted. 
  • For video, we accept video tracking tags, which help us measure viewability and IVT metrics. 
  • Using the click tracker through our third-party tracking tools as well as your ad’s landing page can result in double-counting.

When adding tags, keep in mind: 

  • Image tags are accepted, but not iFrame or Javascript. 
  • LinkedIn third-party tracking will accept timestamps ("ord") and will ignore placeholders for the site keyname, creative/ad/placement IDs, and height/width/alternate.

Set up third-party tracking for LinkedIn Ads campaigns

To set up third-party tracking:

  1. After you obtain tag URLs from your third-party tracking partner, go to Campaign Manager. 

    • If you’ve already created your ad, select the campaign group and campaign of the ads you want to add tracking to, then click Manage below the ad.
    • If you’re adding tracking when creating your ad, complete your ad, then click Save ad.
  2. On the Ads in this campaign page, click the  More menu and select Manage Tracking from the dropdown.

  3. Select Impressions, Clicks, or Video at the top. Video is only available for video ads.

  4. Add the tag URL on each ad you want to track. To add multiple tags, click +Add Another Tag

    • If the same tag is being used to track impressions or clicks on multiple ads, your impressions or clicks will be counted multiple times. To track unique impressions or clicks and prevent double counting, use unique tags for each ad.
  5. Click Save.

    • If you receive an error message, it may be because you're trying to enter a tracking tag from an unsupported vendor.
  6. To confirm successful implementation and ensure your impressions are being counted, check your third-party vendor 48 hours after the campaign starts.

Here's a tip

Once you've installed your third-party tracking tags, you can edit or delete them from the third-party tracking modal.

Impression Tag - Has "trackimp" in URL. For example:

Error messages and explanations

Error message Explanation
Enter a tag from a supported vendor Displays if your tag doesn't include 'doubleclick.net' or 'ad.atdmt.com'. 
Ensure the tag you have entered contains 'https://'  Displays if your tag doesn't include 'https'. 
Enter only one tag per field Only one tag can be entered into each field. To enter an additional tag, select +Add Another Tag
Enter a valid impression tracking tag  Only impression tracking tags can be added to the impression tab fields. Verify that your tag contains '/trackimp/'.
Enter a valid click tracking tag  Only click tracking tags can be added to the click tab. Verify that your click tracking tag contains '/trackclk/'.
Enter a valid video tracking tag  Only video tags can be added to the video tab. Verify that you have not entered an impression or click tag.
