A First-Timers Guide to Networking at SXSW
SXSW or "South By" is a monumental gathering that brings together the brightest minds in technology, film, music, and interactive media, presenting an unparalleled networking opportunity.
Here's a guide packed with strategies to navigate the event effectively:
Do "Some" Homework: Research your must-attend events but remain open to spontaneous connections, as SXSW has a way of guiding you.
Set Networking Goals: Define your objectives to guide your actions, aiming for quality over quantity in connections. Don’t be afraid to tell people what you’re looking for and ask if they know someone who can help. The networking environment is incredibly friendly.
Perfect Your Elevator Pitch: Your pitch should quickly and effectively communicate who you are, what you do, and what you're looking for. Make it memorable, authentic, and open-ended enough to encourage further conversation. Trust me you’re going to repeat it hundreds if not thousands of times.
Shoot Your Shot: Initiate conversations everywhere (lineups, crosswalks, etc), but be mindful of mutual interest and receptiveness aka read the room.
Utilize SXSW App and WhatsApp Groups: Use the official App to search keywords in the attendees portal to find folks who align with your networking goals. Use it to also find out about brand activations, panels, concerts, and film premieres. The true gold for me was in the WhatsApp groups courtesy of Yorkseed and Andrew Yeung. Curated event lists meet hundreds of folks in a chat who all want the same thing, to make connections. Introduce yourself and who you are looking to connect with and watch it come together. The Saturday App was a huge asset too.
Visit the Houses: Explore branded pop-up spaces for intimate networking hubs, offering workshops and social mixers. Get on as many RSVPs as you can early, so you have options during your time.
Be Genuine and Curious: Show genuine interest in others, ask open-ended questions, and engage in meaningful conversations. When a conversation finishes, add a note to their name on your phone so you remember where you met them and any details of specifics they offered.
Connect on LinkedIn: Put your QR code as your phone background and encourage people to connect with you, so you don't have to wait for them to accept the invite. Follow up promptly with a personalized message to solidify connections made during the event.
Be Ruthless with Time: Prioritize connections aligned with your goals and graciously excuse yourself from misaligned conversations.
Wear a Statement Piece: Unique clothing items are effective icebreakers to initiate connections.
Approach SXSW strategically to transform it into a pivotal moment for your professional growth, leveraging connections for future collaborations, investments, and mentorships.
If networking isn't your strength, find a friend to advocate for you.
